A new Overwatch mode is a bit cruel, but also very funny. Like in the movie 300, you have to kick your enemies into a well.
With the introduction of the new workshop in Overwatch, there are numerous creative minds in the community coming up with new game modes for Blizzard’s hero shooter. While much of it is only “somewhat” interesting or slight variations of existing modes, there are also some very creative suggestions.
One of these suggestions is the “Sparta” mode.
What is the Sparta mode? The Sparta mode is a deathmatch where all players can only play as Zenyatta. There are no firearms, only melee attacks can be used – which in Zenyatta’s case is indeed a kick. However, some changes have been made to the kick:
- A kick briefly stuns the target and pushes it a few meters away.
- The next kick can be “charged” via emote, pushing the target further away.
- In the middle of the map is a “death well” that sucks in players who are pushed into it.
- There are power-ups for stronger kicks.
- Jump pads allow for large jumps.

The Sparta mode references the movie “300”: The Sparta mode obviously takes its name from the movie “300”. In the film, there is a scene where a Persian is kicked by the Spartan Leonidas with the words “THIS IS SPARTA!” and tumbles down a well. This scene has been parodied repeatedly over the years and continues to circulate as a regular meme on social media.
It is somewhat unfortunate that the workshop does not allow for custom sounds to be implemented. So you have to imagine the iconic “THIS IS SPARTA!” yourself. But it works too.
What do you think about this Sparta mode? A cool and funny idea? Or does it get boring too quickly? What would you improve?
