In the anime Sailor Moon, Bunny Tsukino has to face numerous dangers. She receives support from the Sailor guardians – and her friend Mamoru Chiba, who reveals himself as Tuxedo Mask against the villains. He is the only male hero supporting Sailor Moon. However, he does not make a good impression.
Why is Tuxedo Mask such a complete disaster? Each of the Sailor guardians has their own element and can perform special attacks. In contrast, Tuxedo Mask can only throw roses to injure opponents. This usually only buys time for the other guardians to execute their stronger attacks.
Apart from that, he only has a staff, which he can use to hit opponents or help people in need. In doing so, Tuxedo Mask often finds himself in dire situations from which the Sailor guardians have to rescue the clumsy one:
- Tuxedo Mask is kidnapped by the enemies. This adds an extra burden for the Sailor guardians.
- In the anime, it happens several times that the protagonists are brainwashed. Tuxedo Mask is the first whose will is ever broken. He becomes evil through Queen Beryl for the first time.
- He even forgets that he was supposed to appear and support the Sailor guardians.
- In the final season, the Sailor guardians die in battle against Galaxia. But who is the very first to bite the dust? That’s right, Tuxedo Mask.
This makes Tuxedo Mask probably the most useless protagonist in Sailor Moon – and this is despite him being the only male hero. It is cool to see that the roles are reversed, as in most superhero series and movies, women take a backseat.

Does he have any good sides? Despite his weaknesses, Tuxedo Mask also has some strengths: He is always trying, has a sense of humor, and loves Bunny to the moon and back.
Moreover, there have been several situations where he has helped the Sailor guardians:
- After the battle between Sailor Moon, Sailor Mars, and Kigaan, Tuxedo Mask steered a bus full of girls out of a black hole.
- He reminded Sailor Mercury during the fight against Marzipan that her powers are not as useless as they seem. With her water attacks, she can dissolve sugar.
- In the fight against Tellu, Tuxedo Mask threw a rose again. This broke open a container with Pure Hearts, causing the creatures created by Tellu to turn against her.
- Even though he was revived by Sailor Moon several times, he turned the tables a few times and saved his girlfriend from death.
So he has had his justification in the anime, as he was a good support for the Sailor guardians at times.
How can I watch Sailor Moon? If you want to watch the anime, your options are unfortunately very limited right now. Currently, neither Sailor Moon nor the reinterpretation Sailor Moon Crystal can be found on official streaming services.
The only way to watch Sailor Moon is through DVDs and Blu-Rays. It is also currently possible to watch all three Sailor Moon movies on Joyn. Additionally, Netflix has the film Sailor Moon Eternal in its program. This is the fourth season of the reboot Sailor Moon Crystal.
