Blizzard has announced a new feature for Overwatch . In this mode, you are basically developers and can create your own heroes!
In the latest Developer Update, Jeff Kaplan, the Game Director of Overwatch, announced a new feature. Starting with the next version of the PTR, players will have access to a feature called “Workshop.” Here, they can choose many options that were previously only available to developers. To a certain extent, it should even be possible to create your own heroes.
What can the Workshop do? With the Workshop, ambitious players can create their own game modes, which are much more extensive than what was previously possible in “Custom Game.”
Players have free reign over many properties and can craft their desired modes. The most exciting part is that players can create their own “prototypes for heroes” here.
Kaplan did not go into exact details, but the statement sounds promising. Aside from that, players can influence pretty much all details of the “game logic,” meaning how the game is played and what rules apply.
- As an example, Jeff Kaplan mentioned that it would be possible to create a “balanced random hero mode.” This would function like the normal random hero mode but would adhere to additional rules – for instance, each team could always be guaranteed to have one tank and one healer.
- Another example is the mode “the floor is lava.” Here, all heroes are set on fire as soon as they touch the ground. This sounds like a mode where exciting battles between Pharahs and Lucios would be possible.
A feature for “power users”: Kaplan emphasized in the announcement that this feature might not appeal to all players, but “power users” will find it easier to work with.
So anyone who has some experience in programming or understands the basic processes behind game mechanics will likely have an easier time with the Workshop. Nonetheless, they have tried to make the feature as understandable as possible. Those who wish can load and edit some of Blizzard’s modes to gradually understand the processes.
No custom maps possible: However, this new feature is not a map editor. It will not be possible to create new maps or change existing maps in their design. Nonetheless, the feature is supposed to be “very powerful” and allow for numerous modifications.
The feature will initially be available only on the PTR but will then transition to the live version.
Are you excited about the Workshop and the possibility of creating even cooler game modes or even your own heroes? Or do you have no interest in such a feature?
