Amazon had already announced beforehand that an unusual system will be used for character names in Lost Ark. Once used, names must be manually unlocked by the developers. Trolls have now exploited this at the launch to steal popular character names.
What is the problem? Last night, there were issues with the download at the launch of Lost Ark. Players who were lucky could connect to the servers immediately, while most had to wait almost an hour.
The players typically used their head start to progress through the quest areas faster. However, some trolls took the time to create characters with well-known names and then delete them.
The names, however, remain deleted for now, which allowed some trolls to secure many well-known names.
Characters from Series, Movies, and Other Games “Deleted”
Which names were trolled? A user on 4chan bragged about having “deleted” well-known names like Sephiroth, Legolas, Naruto, Kirito, Anubis, Zelda, Erza, or Gandalf as early as 6:30 PM. We tried to contact players with the names Legolas, Naruto, and Kirito, but they do not exist. It seems he actually “deleted” the names.
The user gathered more ideas in the thread and stated he created more characters with names from Game of Thrones, Star Wars, and The Lord of the Rings.
It was also suggested in the thread to steal the names of well-known streamers. Notably mentioned was Asmongold, who sees great potential in Lost Ark. He did not get his name, nor alternatives like Zack, Zackrawrr, and even Asmonwastaken.
Why can names be “deleted”? This is due to a system by Amazon itself. Currently, character names are not automatically released again. If Legolas has been created and deleted, the name is completely removed from the system for the time being.
Only when a developer manually releases the name can a “new” Legolas be created. Therefore, the developers also recommended not reserving names for future characters and classes.
Players Are Angry at Trolls, but Also at Amazon
How is the action perceived? On the reddit for Lost Ark, there is a thread that has brought attention to the trolls from 4chan. The action received over 400 comments:
- The user Nightmare4545 comments ironically: “I didn’t see that coming when they [Amazon] announced their stupid naming policy.”
- Katacutie also sees the fault with Amazon: “Honestly: The people doing this are assholes, but Amazon is to blame. This naming system has no justification in 2022.”
- Kaaji1359 is instead glad about the trolls’ action: “Honestly, if you like these names, they are doing us a favor.”
