With the latest patch 5.2, the gender lock on wedding clothing was removed in the MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV. This change is not received positively by everyone, and part of the community is calling for a “hide glamour” option.
What happened? Since yesterday, February 18, the patch 5.2 is online in FFXIV. In addition to a lot of new content, the update also brought a small change that is causing excitement in the official forums.
Gender lock is generally a big topic in the FFXIV community. Players have requested that the purely female bunny outfit be made available for men, which has now been implemented.
The removal of the gender lock has now also occurred with the wedding clothing, allowing men and women to wear the clothing of the opposite gender starting with patch 5.2. This led to cheers from part of the community, but anger from another part.
What is the problem? In the Japanese section of the official FFXIV forums, a thread appeared titled “Regarding male characters wearing dresses“. In it, the thread creator explained:
To be honest, as a man, it feels uncomfortable and degrading to see another man wearing a dress, even if it is a 3D character in a game.

The player further explained that he does not demand to revert the change. Instead, he asked for an extension of FFXIV’s projection system (Transmog). His suggestion was to introduce an option to hide other people’s projections.
80 pages of discussions about “Hide projections”
This is what part of the Western players say: This suggestion was raised in the English section of the forums. In a long thread, players debated for over 80 pages whether this option is reasonable or not.
Reasons for the option were raised not only about men in dresses, but also about women fighting in bikinis. According to the players, this breaks their immersion.
They would therefore like the option to turn off other players’ projections for themselves. This should only happen on the client side and only be visible to the player himself.
The opposing side argued that such a change would cost many resources. Additionally, the clothing would not be more fitting to FFXIV’s lore, as every player would then run around in wildly mixed gear.
The FFXIV team has not yet commented on the issue.
