In The Elder Scrolls Online (PC, PS4, Xbox One) has a ton of cool mounts. However, those who do not want to pay real money have to settle for 4 horses. This frustrates some players a lot!
What’s it about? The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) impresses collectors of mounts with 74 partly extremely cool mounts. Among them are exotic creatures such as big cats, wolves, mechanical constructs, lizards, insects, bears, and elemental beasts.
However, these creatures are only for paying customers. Because those who do not want to spend real money can only get a maximum of 4 horses in different colors.
Those who do not pay only get horses
If you want to pay for your mount only with in-game money, you can buy only 3 horses with different coat patterns from the stable. A complete free horse is available as a level-up reward. So that’s only 4 mounts you can get for free.
Cool mounts only for real money: If you want something more exotic, you need to pay real money. Some mounts are available directly in the cash shop. Particularly impressive mounts can be found in loot boxes. However, the very best and most exotic creatures are extremely rare.

Low chance for the best drop: According to a table on Reddit, the finest mounts are contained in a loot box with only a 0.12 percent chance. According to this table, one would have to buy loot boxes worth $1,962.48 to get such a “Radiant Apex” mount. A legendary mount, on the other hand, should appear with a chance of about 14 percent from the box. About $16 would be needed for that.
Unfair money-making or actually okay?
On Reddit, some players complain about these situations. They want to be able to acquire more than just the 4 standard horses without spending real money. After all, ESO is a Buy2Play game that they have paid for and not a Free2Play title that would need such measures.
Mounts are only cosmetic: Other players do not see it that way and defend Zenimax’s approach. After all, all mounts in the game are identical; the fiery Senche Tiger has the same stats as the good old horse from the stable.
Is the subscription financing mounts?
ESO subscription gives money back: Other players argue that ESO Plus customers, that is, subscribers, receive their investment back in crown coins. These are the real money coins with which you can buy loot boxes and other stuff in the shop.
In other games, you wouldn’t get that, which is why the ESO system is actually fair. You get enough coins back through a subscription, and those who play ESO more intensively would anyway maintain a Plus membership.
With the coins, you can easily buy a premium mount or a few loot boxes. And with the offers for new DLCs or add-ons, there is often also a mount included, including the current riding panther for pre-orders of Summerset.
What do you think? Is it okay that you can only get the special mounts for real money because they are only cosmetic and can theoretically be financed by a subscription? Or is that completely unacceptable?
