Although Son-Goku and many other characters are from the Saiyan race, there are beings that mangaka Akira Toriyama found even more interesting. This will be one of the reasons why they appear in Dragon Ball Daima.
Which race is it about? In addition to cyborgs, angels, and dragons, there is the race of demons in the universe of Dragon Ball.
- The demons live in the demon realm, which is currently the setting in Dragon Ball Daima.
- A common feature of the demons is that they have pointed ears and a colorful skin tone, which distinguishes them from humans.
- Their average lifespan is 1,000 years, and they possess the ability to perform magic.
We get to know the inhabitants of the demon realm not only in the current Dragon Ball anime but also in the spin-off Sand Land. There, the protagonist Beelzebub is actually the prince of the demons. In an interview from 2023, Toriyama explained what made them more exciting than the Saiyans.
Dragon Ball Daima takes place in the realm of demons:
The creator of Dragon Ball has a fondness for demons
Why does Toriyama prefer them? In the magazine “Sand Land Kazenban” from August 2023 (via Kazenshuu), the creator of Dragon Ball and Sand Land revealed that he prefers to invent stories that are not based on reality. Therefore, he finds it boring if the protagonist is just an ordinary human.
In his early prototypes of Dragon Ball, Son-Goku was still an ordinary boy. To avoid making him completely boring, he probably transformed him into a Saiyan over time.
However, Saiyans are still quite similar to humans. Toriyama finds demons more exciting. For him, a demon is a being where “anything could be possible.” He believes there are all sorts of forms of demons, with the highest-ranking demons possessing beings like the demon kings Satan or Dabra.
The creator of Dragon Ball seems to enjoy that he can experiment with various ideas using demons. Since much more is possible with demons than with human-like beings, he can try out new concepts and come up with plot lines that would not be possible with humans.
The name of the demon king reveals that Akira Toriyama has indeed contributed to Dragon Ball Daima. The mangaka has a weakness for wordplay, which is reflected in the names of certain races and families: A detail from Dragon Ball Daima reveals that Akira Toriyama was truly involved
