Last year, Destiny 2 worked to drastically reduce the total number of in-game currencies. Instead of 24 different currencies where hardly anyone understood, there will only be five main currencies in the future. And that is a real improvement, as some find.
Why did one need an accountant in Destiny 2? As in every game, there are also in-game currencies in Destiny 2. When the DLC “The Witch Queen” was released in 2022, no less than 24 currencies were available in the game. Too much. Especially for new players who could not get through the abundance of currencies at all.
However, in the last year and a half, Bungie has been working to drastically reduce the total number of in-game currencies. Instead of a myriad of different currencies that influence the gameplay, there will only be five main currencies in the future.
5 instead of 24 currencies to simplify Destiny
Why is Bungie taking this step? The changes to the economy system of Destiny 2 are a direct response to player feedback, who wished for more clarity and less confusion regarding the in-game currencies. Bungie has listened and has taken the user-friendliness of the game to the next level.
The following has been removed or changed:
- Several types of resonance elements for weapon crafting have been deleted.
- Removal of all planetary materials, such as microphasic data lattice, baryon strands, or glacier starweed.
- Removal of synthetic strands for the transmog system.
- Elimination of finest material fabric and rainmakers, which were merely other forms of glimmer and enhancement cores.
- Upgrade modules have been simplified so that only glimmer is required for purchase, no longer multiple currencies.
In particular, for the future of the game in 2025, this was an important step because the old and much too complex economy system would have been a daunting hurdle for newcomers. Now players can look forward to not having to act like accountants and needing vast amounts of different materials to progress in the game.
The following five main currencies remain:
- Glimmer
- Legendary shards
- Enhancement cores
- Enhancement prisms
- and ascendant shards and alloys
In addition, there are still a few extremely rare one-time currencies, such as exotic engrams or seasonal keys. But nothing more.
Outside of gameplay, there is still silver and glimmer dust. However, despite the increasingly annoying microtransactions in Destiny, which are criticized by players, the glimmer dust economy is still well-structured and quite solid. It could be worse overall, says Destiny author Paul Tassi, looking more worried towards Diablo 4 than Destiny 2.
With the upcoming simplification of the economy system in Destiny 2, Bungie ensures that the game becomes more accessible to all players, regardless of their experience.
