A community challenge has started in Destiny 2. What do you have to do and what rewards are waiting at the end?
What kind of challenge is this? Since the evening of September 3, 2019, a community challenge has been running in Destiny 2. Many Guardians may not have noticed much, as there is no indication in the game nor any “counter” displayed to track progress in this challenge.
Only Bungie cheerfully posted on social media: Hey guys, the community challenge is live.
When is the challenge active? You have time to participate from September 3 to September 10 at 7 PM. So it lasts for one Destiny week.
Fly to Mars and punch the Hive in the face
What do I have to do in the community challenge? Since you are allowed to face the Hive on the Moon in Shadowkeep, Bungie wants to prepare you for this danger by having you eliminate a lot of Hive enemies. Travel to Mars and
- defeat 175,000 Escalation Protocol bosses of wave 7,
- defeat 300 million Hive enemies on Mars
- defeat Nokris 150,000 times in the Mars Nightfall “Strange Terrain”
- defeat Xol 100,000 times in the Mars Nightfall “Will of the Thousands”
- use 300,000 Override Frequencies
- and complete at least one Nightfall this week to be able to receive the community challenge reward
As chance would have it, Will of the Thousands and Strange Terrain (and The Corrupted) are the Nightfall strikes this week. And as the Flashpoint also takes place on Mars, you can spend a lot of time on the red planet this week.
What rewards are in it for me? You cannot complete the above tasks alone. The entire community has to work together to tackle the challenge. If they succeed, all players will receive:

- and additional rewards in the Menagerie. Cabal Emperor Calus will then be generous and provide more loot for successful Menagerie completions. Once the challenge is completed, you will receive two guaranteed rewards upon opening the chest (with rune usage) and an additional reward will be added every Friday for the rest of the season.
Keep in mind that you need to complete at least one Nightfall to receive the emblem.
Where can I check the progress? In the game, you will not receive notifications about how much progress the community has already made in the challenge. But community manager dmg04 promises that daily updates on the progress will be published.
Many Guardians find this unfortunate; for example, they would have liked to see a counter or progress bar next to the Mars map that fills up and shows progress on the tasks.
Currently, there is no information from Bungie about how much progress you have already made. The community has already been quite diligent. A Redditor presents their new tool that is supposed to display the Nokris and Xol kills this week. So far, after about 12 hours, 17.43% of the required kills for Xol and 14.09% for Nokris have been achieved.
