In Destiny 2, players are at risk of missing out on a community event for the first time. Right at Christmas.
As is customary during the Christmas season, the Dawning event is upcoming in Destiny. The Tower is festively decorated, there is snow everywhere, and even a shining Dawning tree delights the players. However, there is a new challenge this year. And right now, it seems like the entire Destiny community is collectively struggling with it.
This is the challenge: In the Dawning 2020, it’s not just about baking delicious cookies and unwrapping gifts for event weapons. The entire Guardian community is supposed to rally together to create a festive spirit.
What sounds like a cliché slogan for the holiday season is a community event in Destiny 2. The Christmas spirit is a tangible resource, and all players must collectively gather 1 billion of it through gifts and activities by the end of the event (according to data miners).
The exact status of the generated Dawning spirit can be tracked by players in their quest inventory. (December 21, 2:00 PM):
This is why the task is at risk of failing: The much-needed Dawning spirit gradually improves the quality of the Dawning gifts. The rewards improve in the pattern known from weapons and armor, reaching up to the exotic (golden) tier – which is waiting at Quest Step 10.
- Currently, Guardians are at Quest Step 5 of 10. The problem: the community has been stuck here for almost 4 days.
- Forbes reported on December 19 that Guardians are barely able to raise the spirit bar. They were collectively at 60% and also at Quest Step 5. That corresponds to about 150 million or units of Dawning spirit.
- There simply hasn’t been enough good spirit coming in for days.
- It is now the morning of December 22, and since yesterday afternoon, we have only reached 96% at Step 5, which is an increase of 9%.
If players continue at this rate, the balance at the end of the event on January 5, 2021, will be around 700 million Dawning spirit, if it exists at all.
Will the Guardians actually lose for the first time at Christmas?
Such community events are nothing new for the Guardians. Some time ago, for example, it was about rebuilding the Lighthouse for the Trials. However, the Guardians were so generous that Bungie allegedly had to raise the set goals. Otherwise, players would have finished the donation marathon too early.
Can the Guardians even lose? This alleged intervention by Bungie is also the reason many players are not overly worried. The motto is: “Bungie will never let the Guardians lose – they will lower the threshold just before the end.”
Another reason that still gives players hope is that most Guardians are only slowly unlocking their special Dawning ship. This exotic ship can be upgraded in multiple tiers, generating more Dawning spirit.
This way, there is more spirit yield for delivering gifts and completing bounties.
This is the question: It is now uncertain whether the Guardians will suddenly be filled with zeal as the event duration progresses and generate enough Dawning spirit to be able to unwrap exotic gifts. Or whether day by day the Grinch will take over and the community will fail for the first time – right at the season of goodwill.
