Destiny 2 is going for the Olympics and lets Hunters, Titans, and Warlocks face off in competition. How are the Guardian Games faring?
This event is about: On April 21, the whistle blew for the Guardian Games 2020. In this year’s spring event, the Guardians will not be fighting against a common enemy, but the 3 classes will compete against each other.
In the three-week competition, it will be determined which class takes the prize: Hunters, Titans, or Warlocks. Although there will also be fights for new exotic rewards, primarily it is about glory and the sublime feeling when the other classes are looked down upon from the lofty winner’s podium.
By the way, we at MeinMMO will also participate in the Guardian Games, so be sure to check it out:
The Guardian Games 2020 have a loot problem
The concept of the Guardian Games sounds exciting; since the announcement, the classes have been teasing each other. The event was highly anticipated, and players were very curious about the final implementation of the event before it began.
We take a look around and summarize how the event is being received shortly after the starting whistle.
How is the community reacting? The mood regarding Destiny 2 on Reddit is currently very low – this is also shown in an analysis. Posts with titles like “Guardian Games don’t show which class is the best” address that it is not a real competition; the culprit is the omnipresent quests.
The aversion to the loot grind can be found throughout the entire subreddit. Many are seemingly disappointed that something cool was expected and are now expressing frustration.
There is a certain suspicion regarding the fact that two massive threats are currently endangering the Destiny world:
- The crash of the Cabal mother ship; the direct danger of Season 10
- The imminent arrival of Darkness in the form of Pyramid ships
Some Guardians do not like that the Vanguard is organizing competitive events during such times.
What do our readers say? You at MeinMMO have so far been relatively reserved with your statements concerning the Guardian Games. However, you have clear words for the loot mechanics, even if you wish everyone fun at the games, just like our reader WooDaHoo:
It’s all nice and expected but uninspired. But having to do specific activities for the medal bounties to effectively collect (Strikes/Gambit/Crucible…) drives me crazy. […] There are surely many who have fun at the event. And that is ultimately the main thing!
In the lead-up, various jibes between the classes were also seen in our comments sections. And we heard that Hunters, Titans, and Warlocks have already been declared winners.
What do the online outlets say about the Guardian Games: Forbes praises the live tracking system, as players can see in real-time via raised flags which team has won the most medals – a significant improvement over the tracker from the previous Fraktalin event. The class items also appeal to the UU colleagues and create a great “we feeling”.
However, the strong focus on the quests casts a shadow over the Guardian Games. “Quests everywhere, quests” they say, criticizing the mechanics concerning the medals.
The site PCGamer harshly titles “The new Guardian Games event in Destiny 2 is a mess” and criticizes, for example, the focus on the Eververse.
They also express concerns about fair competitions since there are significantly more Hunters than any other class in Destiny 2. This concern can be alleviated. Bungie stated that each class will be weighted according to their number of players. And it currently seems (24.04) that Titans are in the lead, not Hunters.
This is how streamers see the event: The well-known streamer and content creator Datto expresses (via YouTube) that he hoped for more than just the quest mechanics. He imagines a special “3vs3vs3 mode”. He doesn’t feel like he is “in a Guardian Olympics”.
The biggest Destiny streamer on Twitch, Gladd, is currently largely taking a break from Destiny, but tweeted that Hunters should ideally only take 2nd place and lose intentionally:
In general, it seems that streamers are more focused on the issue of cheaters and Trials.
Interesting idea, but poor implementation
Summarizing the various opinions on the Guardian Games, it becomes clear that the actually very exciting idea loses popularity due to the in-game implementation.
We are eager to see how the situation develops in the coming weeks of the event.
Players love to stand up for their class, no question, but they expected something different. What subclasses the MeinMMO readers crowned as winners, you can read in our ranking.
