In Destiny 2, the entire community faced the risk of failing an event, right at Christmas. Bungie is stepping in now to drive away the Grinch.
The festive Christmas season has begun in the MMO shooter Destiny 2. During the Dawning event 2020, baking, snow playing, and gift unwrapping are taking place. Additionally, all players have the task of collectively creating a good Christmas atmosphere.
However, on December 22, MeinMMO reported that the community was at risk of losing the winter and Christmas event.
What happened? This so-called “Dawning spirit” is earned by gifting homemade cookies and completing certain tasks. In return, the quality of gifts in a 10-step quest increases.
But oh no, the Grinch has taken over the community. For days, the guardians were stuck at step 5 out of 10. The spirit gauge only increased drop by drop, and it became increasingly apparent that the high goal of generating one billion Dawning spirits by the event’s end on January 5, 2021, was mathematically impossible.
The guardian then wondered: How will developer Bungie react? Will the guardians receive a cold lesson, or will there be a helpful hand?
This is how Bungie reacts: From now on, guardians will receive triple Dawning spirit from all sources. This has been effective since the night of December 24 and will last until the event ends. The joyful news was announced by the “Bungie Help” account on Twitter:
Why does the community not want to celebrate Christmas?
Such community events are not rare in Destiny 2. For years, there have been tasks where all players must push a progress bar upwards through their actions. However, the community has never been so poorly positioned as it is now for the Christmas event 2020.
- The reason is, on one hand, that it is simply very boring and repetitive to farm Dawning spirit deliberately. Initially, baking cookies and receiving an event weapon is fun – but with the required amount of spirit, fatigue quickly sets in.
- Additionally, part of the community is eager to see if Bungie “allows” the guardians to fail in such an event. Others are expressing their frustration with the lukewarm winter event by not participating (via reddit).
- It is also unhelpful that there is no clear reward goal. Players only know that a gift with an exotic tier awaits at the end. Whether it contains an exotic item, even a new exotic masterwork catalyst, or just more enhancement cores, no one knows.

Will the players succeed in the event now? According to the latest projections, yes! Part of the community seems to be programming Excel sheets instead of baking. These show that the final exotic gift tier is expected to be reached on January 1, 2021 – just 4 days before the event ends.
