The wingsuit is one of the new gadgets that first appeared in Battlefield 2042. Now, a player has shown in an impressive clip how mobile you can be with it. He has relied on an old shooter trick.
What is this gadget? The wingsuit allows you to glide down from almost any elevated position on the map. You can also build up quite a bit of speed.
The gadget belongs to the specialist Sundance, with which you can also assemble a very strong loadout for XP farming.
In the clip by timtheringitdyding, you can see how powerful the gadget is and how quickly you can move around the map with it – faster than with vehicles or aircraft like helicopters:
23-year-old shooter trick makes you even faster
How does the player do it? To move around the map like this, you need to pay attention to a few details.
- The wingsuit can be activated from a low height, similar to the parachute.
- You are fast with it but also lose height. A little practice will be necessary at first to master the controls.
- The player flies on the map “Manifest” from container to container.
- It’s important to open and close the wingsuit at the right moment.
- Additionally, there’s an old trick, as the player uses the so-called “Bunny Hopping”: With a small jump right at landing, he prevents Sundance from losing speed on landing.
- This “bunny hop” leads directly to the next wingsuit flight, which is not slower than the last.
- This greatly increases the overall distance covered without the player losing much speed.
What is bunny hopping? In its basic form, bunny hopping means that you jump at the right moment during forward movement and thus hop through the map in a continuously hopping manner.
If bunny hopping is done correctly, you don’t lose speed and continuously move your hitboxes, making it very difficult to hit precisely. The method originates from the ancient shooter Quake from the late 90s. It was first used in 1998 in a “Quake done Quick” (via sourceruns.org).
The trick was already discovered during the open beta of Battlefield 2042, at that time players used bunny hopping in conjunction with the grappling hook. However, this was already fixed before release.
Here, the player uses a jump at the right moment to continue flying and to reopen the wingsuit immediately after landing. This “catapults” him further and allows him to sweep across the map at lightning speed.
However, the end of the clip also shows that this can go wrong pretty quickly. The player lands directly within range of a tank and is taken out.
Mixed opinions on the gadget – “This is not a wingsuit, it’s a jetpack”
What do the players say? They are quite divided. On one hand, they celebrate the gadget because it’s incredibly fun to zip around the map with it. On the other hand, they criticize that the wingsuit is far too powerful and destroys the immersion of the realistic battlefield.
Some just find the wingsuit amusing and draw comparisons to other games. Insincere_Apple2656 thinks the gadget resembles the “Raccoon Suit from Super Mario”. (via reddit)
Comparisons are also made to Spider-Man, Apex Legends, and Titanfall.
Noir_Vena-Cava writes: “That looks like a jetpack, not like a wingsuit” (via reddit). TrickiestCOL therefore says: “The wingsuit needs to be adjusted to only work from a certain height, e.g. a 2-story building. Another poorly implemented design feature” (via reddit).
Medium0rare counters: “Maybe. From the videos, it looks like [Sundance] is the only fun part of the game.”
R15K comments: “If you had shown me this a month ago and said: ‘This is the next Battlefield’, I would have called you a liar and not believed that they would implement this.”
What do you think of the wingsuit? Do you see it as a meaningful innovation? Or do you think it doesn’t fit Battlefield?
