All players start in Anthem with the Ranger class. You unlock the other three Javelin exosuits throughout the story. This was confirmed by producer Mark Darrah on his Twitter.
The Ranger is the all-rounder: This Javelin is a classic all-rounder that can do a bit of everything and is therefore versatile. It is said to shine particularly in 1vs1 battles. This probably makes it the ideal class to get to know the game and the different mechanics of the suits.
The order is up to you: The order in which you unlock the other three Javelins Colossus, Storm, and Interceptor is up to you. You will obtain the exosuits through various story missions. These appear to be non-linear, and you simply play the missions you want to tackle.
You will unlock all classes early in the story: It is confirmed that you will unlock all Javelins before the first quarter of the story is over.
The level of your Freelancers determines the strength of the loot drops
The Freelancer levels up independently of the Javelins: In Anthem, the characters you play are called Freelancers. As a Freelancer, you can slip into and control the Javelin exosuits. You will level up with your Freelancer, and this level determines how strong the loot is that you find.
If you switch suits in between, you will always receive equipment that matches your character’s level. Therefore, it doesn’t matter if you leave a Javelin unused for a while and want to boost it later.
What do you think about starting with the Ranger? Would you have preferred to choose your starter Javelin yourself?
