What game is this about? We are talking about Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden. The action RPG was released on February 12, 2024, and was developed by DON’T NOD, the creators of Life is Strange and Vampyr.

Love story meets ghost hunting
What is the game about? Banishers tells the story of Red mac Raith and Antea Duarte – two ghost hunters, also known as Banisher. The two lovers find themselves in New Eden, a settlement in northern America, at the end of the 17th century.
One day, however, their lives are turned upside down: Antea is killed and returns as a ghost. As the story unfolds, you decide whether to fulfill your duty as a Banisher and let Antea go or do everything to bring her back. The latter, however, will require sacrifices.
Banishers relies on an action combat system, where you can switch between the two protagonists. Red inflicts physical damage with sword and musket, while Antea uses supernatural powers. You unlock more powers over time in a talent tree.
Outstanding story game with weaknesses in gameplay
How is the game received? On Steam, nearly 4,000 reviews paint a very positive picture of the game. Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is rated 85% positively. Especially the characters and the story have been very well received by the storytellers at DON’T NOD.

However, in terms of gameplay, many find the game a bit stretched and repetitive. You spend a lot of time traversing the semi-open world, and the variety of enemies leaves something to be desired. If you can overlook this for the sake of the story, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is a really good story game with decisions that have consequences.

By the way, the latest installment of Life is Strange is no longer being developed by DON’T NOD, but by Deck Nine Games. However, the new development studio faces significant criticism – also because they recently laid off some developers right before Christmas.
