The Alpha 2 of Ashes of Creation has officially launched and more players than ever are flocking to the MMORPG’s servers. And the best part: testers can freely report on their experiences.
What do I need to know about Alpha 2? While Ashes of Creation was quite a patchwork during the first alpha testing phase, since October 25, 2024, it is finally possible to test the MMORPG with all its basic functions and systems such as quests, nodes, world bosses, open-world PvP, crafting, mounts, and caravans.
This only applies if you have purchased certain Kickstarter or pre-order packages for Ashes of Creation or obtained access through other means. Further waves of players are planned for the following dates:
- November 8, 2024: All purchasers of a First-Wave Bundle may enter Alpha 2
- December 20, 2024: All purchasers of a Second-Wave Bundle may enter Alpha 2
- May 1, 2025: All purchasers of a Third-Wave Bundle may enter Alpha 2
In the coming weeks and months, server stability and scalability will be the focus of the developers. For now, Alpha 2 only runs on weekends.
All important information about Ashes of Creation in under a minute:
Alpha testers are divided
How was the launch of Alpha 2? Quite mixed, actually. Initially, the developers had to slightly postpone the launch time of Alpha 2 due to some unexpected bugs (via X). Then targeted DDoS attacks on the game and web services of Ashes of Creation followed after the launch. Consequently, the servers had to be taken offline for a while (via Reddit).
Despite these launch difficulties, various testers reported spending 20 or more hours in Verra over the weekend, allowing them to explore the current version of the major MMORPG hope extensively.
How does the community rate Alpha 2? The varying first impressions of the testers are evident in the threads from SnooTigers4611 and Hopeful_Impression_1, both of whom describe themselves as casual players.
Hopeful_Impression_1 explains in his extensive post on Reddit that despite various alpha quirks (crashes, graphical errors, bugs) and long wait times, he is already having a lot of fun with Ashes of Creation. It is “grindy in the best possible way” and focuses wonderfully on social interactions with a lot of content.
After Tibia, Knight Online, and Perfect World, AoC has everything the next MMORPG needs to keep him engaged for more than ten years – in his current assessment.
At the start of Alpha 2, there was a developer’s Let’s Play:
In the also extensive thread on Reddit by SnooTigers4611, there is little praise: The music is fantastic, the terrain of the world is well designed, the battles are fun enough, and the visual animations and effects are quite nice.
The list of criticism or points that he believes need urgent improvement is significantly longer:
- The pathfinding of mobs and readability in battles can be improved. Dodging does not work correctly. For example, enemy melee attacks are said to hit even from ten meters away.
- The map, despite its nice design, is “miserable” and not fun to use.
- The chat system is “completely useless” in its current state.
- There is supposed to be no player guidance through quests, and his group apparently is stuck at level 7/8 because there is supposed to be no indication of where they should go next.
- In Ashes of Creation, there is currently so little story and lore that the world feels disappointingly generic.
- With quest mobs, players compete with each other, making it hard to make progress in kill quests.
- The open-world PvP is currently very frustrating: A player reportedly activated PvP and had his mount killed. This forced him to run through the game world on foot for ten minutes. When he tried to defend himself, he was penalized by the corruption debuff. He could apparently only get rid of the effect through the death of his character, although the tooltip says otherwise.
Is there any more feedback? Players are currently discussing their experiences from Alpha 2 in various threads:
- Elegang-Ad-6797 writes on Reddit: “There is still a long way to go before the game meets the standards set by the team, but I trust they will make it. […] The fun I had in the game made me forget that I even had to wait in line.”
- VOX-OPS explains on Reddit: “I spent almost 20 hours of the last 48 hours on this game. I haven’t played a game this much in 6 years; it’s crazy that I enjoy this game in its current state more than full-fledged games.”
- deanusMachinus adds regarding mob tagging (via Reddit): “Hopefully, the tagging of mobs will be updated. The nameplate doesn’t gray out, so you don’t know who hit first, which is frustrating.”
What else do I need to know about Ashes of Creation? Ashes of Creation is a sandbox MMORPG set in a fantasy environment, played in a vast open world. You fight against world bosses and compete against each other in PvP. Additionally, there will be a system where you level areas, improve towns, and change parts of the game world – the so-called “nodes.” Development of the MMORPG began back in 2015.
