On the Amazon streaming service, you can currently watch a really nasty horror movie for free, which is worth a recommendation by MeinMMO author Schuhmann. In ‘Oculus’, Karen Gillan, known as Nebula from the Marvel superhero films, faces an ancient adversary.
This is how Oculus begins: Oculus begins with a young man being released from the psychiatric hospital where he has spent half of his life. The doctor advises him to reach out to his sister, but his mental health comes first. Seems like a strange piece of advice, but the doctor knows what he’s saying.
Freshly released, the young man wants to start anew and distances himself from the past, which has brought him 10 years of therapy and psychiatry, but his resolute sister (Gillan) has other plans: She wants to prove to the world that her father was not a crazy murderer and for that, she needs her brother’s help.
He looks somewhat compassionately at his sister, who could have also benefited from 10 years of therapy to process everything they experienced as children. With his freshly gained psychotherapy knowledge, he explains to his sister what she misunderstands and misremembers.
But the experiment his sister plans will quickly put his newly gained clear view of the world to the test.
Familiar horror themes, but reimagined
What’s special about the film: Oculus, from 2013, is by Mike Flanagan: He is one of the most exciting horror directors of the last 10 years: The Canadian manages to take familiar horror themes and tell them realistically, but with a new twist. The way he does this is reminiscent of Stephen King: His latest work, the miniseries ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’, is expected soon on Netflix.
In the Netflix series ‘Black Mass’, he brought the vampire myth into the modern age, and in Oculus, he manages to do that with themes like ghosts, curses, and possession.
His characters act credibly and competently, but the other side also has many more tricks up its sleeve than it appears.
‘Oculus’ often feels like a chamber play, taking place only in limited locations and with a handful of characters, all excellently acted: Besides the determinedly performing Karen Gillan, known as Nebula, Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica) also leaves a lasting impression.
