What kind of MMORPG is this? The MMORPG WalkScape is a special fitness MMORPG that requires you to move in real life. Instead of sitting for hours at home in front of the PC or console, you always have the MMORPG with you on your phone and advance with every step.
However, WalkScape is not just a simple step counter; it hides a real MMORPG with lifeskills that is heavily inspired by RuneScape.

Looting and leveling through movement
What can you do in the MMORPG? WalkScape offers over 15 different skills that you can train and master in the game. Additionally, there are various materials to collect, which you can then turn into equipment or other items through crafting. The skills in the game include abilities like woodcutting, foraging, or fishing. All skills increase with the steps you take in real life.
WalkScape has a story that spans different continents, so you have plenty to do as you walk from A to B. Furthermore, dozens of NPCs with their own quests and services await you scattered throughout the world.
The game is a true MMORPG; you can team up with your friends to work towards goals together, without having to be physically in the same location.
How does WalkScape differ from other apps? While WalkScape has a major competitor in the sector of gamified fitness apps with Pokémon GO, there are some points the developer has intentionally designed differently:
- No GPS signal is needed; WalkScape only analyzes the steps of the phone
- The game world is not synchronized with the real world, so you can go anywhere, even if you are only walking in your neighborhood in real life
- There are no ads and microtransactions; the game is financed through a low-cost subscription model and is solely supported by the community
How can you play it? WalkScape is currently still in a closed beta, which you can access in two ways. Either you support the developers with about €3-4 per month on Patreon and immediately gain access to the beta, or you sign up for free on the website WalkScape.app and hope to get access this way.
On Reddit, the developer recently promised to invite more beta testers from the list in the future. So if you want to save money and can wait, you might be able to play for free with a bit of luck.
In the future, the developer wants to make more skills and new content available that will expand the MMORPG.
