When you think of football games, you immediately think of EA FC. However, the series mainly focuses on realism. A developer now wants to move away from that and is using his expertise to create a new football game on Steam, which emphasizes fast action in multiplayer.
What kind of game is it? In 2024, the studio Sloclap announced the game Rematch. This is a new football game played in 5v5 multiplayer. Instead of controlling an entire team, each player controls an individual character.
Unlike EA FC, the title also incorporates fast action that does not always look realistic. This matches surprisingly well with the experience of the developers, who had their first major hit three years ago.

Football like in the old days on RTL2
What makes Rematch special? As you can see from the trailer, you do not play the game from a bird’s-eye perspective, but in an immersive third-person view. Like in other team-based multiplayer titles, each player takes on a character in the 5-member team.
You only control this character and must work with teamwork to try to win the football match.
Rather than realistic physics, the game opts for an arcade experience. It is fast, spectacular, and focuses on quick movements. This fits unusually well with the developer studio Sloclap, which celebrated success with Sifu in 2022. The martial arts game relied on great animations and a challenging difficulty level.
The love for great animations is also evident in Rematch. Just watching is fun, and the spectacular moves like bicycle kicks remind one of the good old days with the Kickers on RTL2.
For variety, there are also unusual arenas and restrictive rules like offsides or sidelines. Fans of classic sports games might also feel reminiscent of the FIFA Street series, which also focused on spectacular moves and fast-paced gameplay.
When will Rematch be released? Rematch will be released on June 19, 2025, for Steam, Xbox Series, and PS5. The game will cost €24.99 on Steam. In addition, there will also be a Pro or Elite version that costs an additional €10 or €20, allowing you to play 3 days earlier, in addition to additional goodies.
