In a horror game on Steam, you should pay close attention to what you say: One wrong word could mean your end.
What kind of game is this? Cursed Companions is a co-op horror game for up to 8 players that sends you into procedurally generated dungeons filled with ghosts and monsters. The twist is that you issue many commands directly through the microphone, using voice recognition.
The developer, Crimson Forge Studios, has not yet revealed when the release is scheduled. However, you can already download a demo on Steam and try it out alone or with friends.

Talking is both a blessing and a curse here
And here’s how it works: With certain words (or phrases), you execute specific commands. Saying “Light my fire” lights your torches if you want a bit more light in the dark dungeons, and the command “it’s a trap” disables traps in the area.
Your injured comrades could use some love – a simple “all you need is love” and their wounds are healed. You can scare off some monsters by rejecting them with “you’re not my type” (one almost sympathizes).
Your goal is to search for treasures in the dungeons for your dark queen. However, these artifacts are cursed and punish you if you say a wrong word.
With a “follow me”, your comrades quickly drop to the ground. If you want to warn your friends to be cautious, be direct: A simple “careful” and they no longer have to worry about the monsters because you’ve taken care of that for them.
You invest loot in your own estate
Is there a kind of progression involved? Yes, there is. Items that you bring back from the dungeon can be sold for gold. You can then invest this in new equipment, skill upgrades, and decorative objects for your own little estate.
Cursed Companions also offers several game modes:
- In Traitor Mode, one player acts as a traitor and randomly distributes curses. The other players must figure him out before he gets them all.
- In team play mode, you can even compete with two teams of up to 8v8.
Does the game support other languages as well? Unfortunately no, at least at launch, Cursed Companions will only support English. However, the developers plan to provide simple instructions that allow you to add your own language.
