The voice actress Mayumi Tanaka has been voicing the Straw Hat Pirate Ruffy in the Japanese original of One Piece for 25 years. Since then, she has occasionally appeared in other animes. Netflix and Crunchyroll have now secured an anime in which the talented voice actress can be heard. This fulfills a wish she has had for a long time.
Which anime is it about? This year, the anime for DAN DA DAN, based on the manga Dandadan, will start. At the Shueisha publishing house, which publishes One Piece and Dragon Ball among others, Dandadan is currently ranking 12th among the most-read mangas.
DAN DA DAN has a crazy story that revolves around paranormal activities:
- The tough Momo meets the nerd Okarun and protects him from his bullies.
- The two get into an intense conversation and come across a significant conflict: Momo believes in the existence of ghosts, while Okarun is certain that there are only aliens as supernatural beings.
- The two try to convince each other that there is only one type of mysterious being. Thus, they visit paranormal places where they encounter the most curious figures.
Even the trailer for the anime shows what beings Momo and Okarun encounter. The animation style is flashy and colorful, and the music immediately makes its way into your ears. In the video, Tanaka can even be heard in her new role as Turbo Granny.

Why is she fulfilling a wish with this? Tanaka mentioned in an interview that Ruffy is the last male character she will voice. Instead, she would like to be the voice of a grandmother, which fits well with her current age of 69 (via Twitter).
And indeed, her new role is that of a grandmother. In DAN DA DAN, Tanaka will take on the role of Turbo Granny. Although the lady is a Yokai, or a spirit, she is at least of the age that Tanaka envisioned for her new role.

Where and when can I watch the anime? If you’ve become curious, you will have to wait until Autumn 2024. The anime is set to start in October and will be available on both Crunchyroll and Netflix.
Both providers will air the anime in the Japanese original sound with German subtitles in simulcast. This means that the latest episodes will be available shortly after their airing in Japanese television.
