When the popular WoW player and streamer Byron “Reckful” Bernstein passed away in the summer of 2020 at the age of just 31, thousands of players gathered in World of Warcraft to mourn the loss together. Now his account is making a surprising, but likely brief comeback.
What kind of comeback is this? Barry74 recently gave insights into the legendary WoW account of his friend Reckful, who passed away in 2020 on Twitch, while sharing memories of his friendship with the streamer and their time together.
It is noteworthy that Reckful’s WoW account was permanently banned by Blizzard in 2014 (via X) because Byron allegedly shared his access with others multiple times despite previous warnings.
Thus, the long-time WoW player had no access to the legendary rogue in the last 6 years of his far too short life. Now, 11 years after the ban, the account suddenly became accessible again. Did Blizzard simply unlock the account on a whim?
What is the current status? The WoW commentator N_Tys first confirmed on X that Reckful’s account is indeed back online after 11 years. Two days later, an update followed on X, accompanied by a screenshot showing a message from Blizzard Support.
It states that the permanently banned account was unfortunately restored due to an error. This error has been corrected, and the ban has been reactivated.
One of the Greats of the Arena
MeinMMO editor Karsten Scholz remembers Reckful: Whenever I read this name, I immediately think of the fantastic Reckful video series, in which Byron showcased fine rogue skills in PvP battles.
I have been playing a dagger-wielding rogue since Vanilla WoW and learned a lot from Reckful’s videos, who achieved remarkable arena successes in various WoW expansions (from Season 4 to Season 9, he reached rank 1 in the 3vs3 category, and he was the first player with a rating of 3000+).
Unfortunately, Byron also had a constant battle with himself. He was diagnosed with a bipolar disorder and struggled with depression for many years. In his streams, the player always spoke openly about his illness and the traumatic events in his life (the suicide of his brother, dementia of his father).
After his much too early death, the Blizzard developers incorporated a tribute to Byron Bernstein as the rogue trainer Reckful in WoW. You can find the NPC in the Cathedral of Stormwind.
