In 20 years, World of Warcraft has changed a lot in Azeroth. However, a few things have also remained the same, and the WoW community is celebrating that.
What exactly is the WoW community celebrating? Well, for one, of course, the current anniversary party for the 20th birthday of World of Warcraft. But also some things that have not changed in the two decades in Azeroth, right here on Reddit.
The starting point of the humorous discussion is a post by Impressive_Internet, who celebrates that sending an in-game letter still costs only 30 copper pieces: “A big shoutout to the postal service in Stormwind and Orgrimmar for keeping mailing affordable.”
For comparison: In 2005, it cost 55 cents in real life to mail a standard letter. Today, you have to invest 85 cents in the stamp. This corresponds to a price increase of 54.55 percent. Early in 2025, it will even become more expensive, with a rumored increase to 95 cents (via tagesschau.de). So it’s no wonder that the postal service from Azeroth is so praised.
Some highlights from 20 years of WoW:
No inflation, less bureaucracy
What else are the players celebrating? User Staran adds on Reddit that public transportation deserves praise too: “New flight points keep being added, and no mayor or bureaucrat out there plans to remove them or declare them outdated.”
Kangaroo- points out (via Reddit) that over the years, the price of the WoW subscription has also remained stable. Many others praise this as well. washout77 writes (via Reddit): “I don’t want to jinx it or anything, but I was thinking the other day about how crazy it is that WoW came out in 2004 and cost $14.99 a month, and it has never changed.”
MDA1912 now fears the worst (via Reddit): “Don’t post stuff like that. We are only one Wowhead article/Tettles video away from postal fees costing 5 gold per letter.” The post has already garnered almost 3,500 upvotes and more than 130 comments.
What has WoW retained over the 20 years that you are particularly celebrating? Let us know in the comments! Do you expect a subscription increase at some point? One thing that will change soon has been recently announced by Blizzard: After 20 years, World of Warcraft is finally getting housing
