What “Call of Duty: Black Ops III” Offers
Call of Duty is a game series from the American publisher Activision, the first installment of which was released in the fall of 2003. The current installment is titled “Call of Duty: Black Ops III.” It was developed by Treyarch and can clearly be classified in the first-person shooter genre.
In what setting does Call of Duty take place?
Typically, players take on the roles of soldiers in war scenarios. The first part of the series took place during World War II, but later titles also take place in futuristic, often fictional scenarios.
In CoD: Black Ops III, which is set in the year 2065, military technology relies on robotics that have produced a new generation of cyber soldiers. You take on the role of a Black Ops soldier who has been turned into a cyber warrior due to a severe injury, equipped with “microcomputers” in his head. This makes him a super-soldier: he is faster, stronger, and smarter.
What role does the online aspect play?
Especially in Black Ops III, the online aspect has gained significance. For the first time, the story modes are fully conceived as four-player co-op ‒ at least online. Through the friends list, you can join a lobby with the push of a button.
What MMO features are included?
First of all: CoD is not an MMO, there’s no need to discuss that. Many aspects that Destiny fulfills are not present here. But Black Ops III prides itself on bringing the social component more into focus.
In addition to the co-op campaign, the zombie mode is particularly interesting here, which you can also start alone, but will rarely get far this way. Because only together can the increasingly larger waves of zombies be defended. This requires teamwork and strategic decisions to stay alive as long as possible.
What does progression look like in Call of Duty Black Ops III?
In the multiplayer mode of Black Ops III, there are several methods to level up, modify, and equip. First, there is a specialist character system where players can choose from different elite Black Ops soldiers. You level up through kills, assists, and the like, unlocking better gear and getting to know your character’s special abilities.
Furthermore, weapons can be customized and modified individually. There are nearly endless combinations available.
In the campaign, each player can also be extensively modified, from weapons and equipment to abilities and outfits. The campaign experience continuously develops through a progression system and a personal armory.
So there are different progression systems in various modes.
What does the PvE content look like?
In the PvE area, you have access to two campaigns that you can play alone or together. Additionally, there are arena-like elements that allow players to approach the game with a different strategy each time.
In the zombie mode, you can face hordes of zombies with your buddies.
What does the PvP content look like?
The PvP area is essentially the heart of the Call of Duty series. Here, it is a matter of leveling up your character in various game modes, equipping yourself with decent weapons, and unlocking perks. A hardcore mode is also available.
If you don’t feel like gathering all the items painstakingly, you can immediately access all weapons and classes in custom matches.
What can be said about the eSports area?
The eSports of Call of Duty is well-developed. Players can form clans and compete against each other. Here, not only private matches but also official tournaments take place in which teams from different countries battle each other.
Activision itself has established an eSports league for the first-person shooter, the “Call of Duty World League” (CWL). This league is intended to be the go-to place for multiplayer fans of the series worldwide. Aside from the CWL, there are several other leagues that require different game modes. Call of Duty is therefore very present in the eSports area. Both professional players and casual gamers are attracted to the eSports on the Playstation 4: Exciting matches from the CWL are brought into your living room with a live event viewer.
Who is Call of Duty suitable for?
CoD places less emphasis on MMO elements compared to Destiny but focuses much more on the PvP area and eSports. This first-person shooter is aimed at both professional players and hobby gamers who occasionally want to shoot around virtually.
CoD: Black Ops III carries the USK-18 rating.
