Of all anime this season, one stands out particularly. If you only have time for one single anime, it should be Frieren.
In recent years, anime fans have really had it good – or so one might think. More series are being released than ever before. No matter what genres you like, there is probably something for everyone. However, with so many productions, there is also a lot of “trash” that you can safely skip.
Anyone trying to keep up with all the series is simply overwhelmed. The selection is too vast, and the number of bad series is simply increasing. Therefore, we want to recommend a series to you that promises to be a true hit right after the first episodes:
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.
What is Frieren about? Frieren tells the story of a fantasy world that at first glance seems a bit clichéd. However, instead of witnessing the great journey of heroes, this adventure is already completed.
For 10 years, the group consisting of the elf mage Frieren, the human priest Heiter, the human hero Himmel, and the dwarf Eisen traveled together. The demon king was defeated, and the kingdom is now facing a time of peace.
After saving the land, Frieren sets out on a journey to pursue her hobby. She collects spells from all over the world.
After 50 years, Frieren returns and realizes that her human companions are already on the brink of death – age has simply caught up with them. Too late, she understands that she has not used the time to truly get to know her companions.
The priest Heiter is still alive and has taken in a small war orphan – but his time is also nearly up. Frieren decides to take the human girl as her student and to repeat the journey she once undertook with her companions in order to perhaps learn more.
What makes Frieren so special? Already in the first episodes, it becomes clear that Frieren will be a sad and emotional story, where time and the mortality of humans are a constant theme.
This theme is also made clear because Frieren’s student grows ever more with the passage of time and has a completely different view of the flow of time as a human. While the nearly timeless Frieren might want to search for a special flower that may not even exist for a few years, for her student, these are important months that she will never get back.

Those who are a little “close to the water” will have to shed some tears in almost every episode. Because as beautiful as a life lasting for millennia sounds – the pain of loss and the regret of not having engaged enough with those who do not have so much time, sit deep every time.

One of the advantages of Frieren is that the series started with a “2-hour special” in which the first four episodes were shown directly. So, you can directly indulge in a really large piece of the story and then stay on track each week to follow the plot further.
