Steps are a powerful tool in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to detect enemy soldiers. However, you can also move completely silently – although it’s not that easy when the field upgrade “Dead Silence” is still on cooldown.
The steps in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 are relatively loud. Enemies can be heard from several meters away, even through thick walls you can hear the tell-tale steps.
If you walk slower, crouched, or aim down sights, the volume of your movement changes. You can even move completely silently – even without the popular field upgrade “Dead Silence”.
However, you need to pay attention to some things and on PC, even make special settings. MeinMMO will show you the most important information about this.

How can I move silently? The most obvious tool is the field upgrade “Dead Silence”. When it is active, you run faster for a moment and are not even heard while sprinting. In the beta, there was still an audible signal when “Dead Silence” was activated – now it can hardly be perceived.
It gets trickier if you want to creep without “Dead Silence”. Because your steps are almost always audible. YouTuber “JackFrags” tested this and found that your steps are actually always audible – no matter how slowly you move.
However, Jack and his testing partner managed to find a movement combination that makes you completely silent:
- Walk slowly
- Crouch
- Be aimed
This way, you are completely silent while walking, but you only move very slowly. In some tactical situations, this can be extremely helpful.
PC players must go into their settings to adjust the “Slow Walk,” while controller players only need to use their controller stick with the appropriate finesse.
To do this on PC, go into settings under “Mouse & Keyboard” and look for the “Movement Advanced Settings.” Set your “Walk Speed” to “Slow” here. Now you also need to assign a key under “Movement Advanced Keybinds” that you will press to walk slowly.

The gameplay of Modern Warfare 2 is somewhat slower compared to earlier versions. This is noticeable even in actions like reloading, activating killstreaks, or sliding.
