A multiplayer game mode in Pokémon Legends: Z-A has started and offers a nice reward if you reach a certain rank in time. However, not all players will have the opportunity to do so.
What kind of game mode is this? It is the “Z-A Battle Club”, a special multiplayer mode in Pokémon Legends Z-A, where you compete online in four-player battles. Within three minutes, you must collect as many points as possible by defeating your opponents. These points are determined not only by the number of defeated Pokémon but also by completing certain tasks. The trainer with the most points wins.
In this way, you can climb ranks from Z to A and receive corresponding rewards. If you manage to reach rank K in the first season of this game mode, an item will be waiting for you to trigger the Mega Evolution of the Water Pokémon Greninja. But there is a catch.

A strong reward that is not available to all players
What is the catch with the reward? To obtain the reward, namely the Mega Stone for Greninja, you need access to the online multiplayer. And players only gain that through a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership to participate in battles over the internet (Source: legends.pokemon.com).
Those who do not wish to purchase a subscription for the online membership will unfortunately miss out. On X, it is stated according to Serebii.net that the Mega Stone may also be available at another time, after the season ending deadline on November 5. But whether it will also be accessible for offline players is neither confirmed nor denied.
How are players reacting to the announcement? Several players express disappointment on X that the reward through the Mega Stone is somewhat time-limited and is behind a paywall of the online subscription.
Players highlight that it is quite easy to obtain the Greninja Mega Stone – one player emphasizes that they only needed an hour and a half in the ranked mode (Coaltergeist on X) – but the principle of a time-limited season and a required online membership leaves a bad taste for many players:
“Oh man. That is a much higher rank than I hoped for. Not everyone likes PvP, so it is really annoying for those players that it is so tedious to achieve this rank just to get something that shouldn’t be locked behind PvP” (Kisara Lightstorm on X).
Even though the Z-A Battle Club consists of a multiplayer format that primarily caters to PvP players, you do not necessarily need a Nintendo Switch Online membership to play Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
