What is Destiny 2 about? Essentially, Destiny is about: “Shooting aliens in the face while discussing the Oscars with your friends.” This is how the franchise head, Luke Smith, described it himself. What is the meaning behind this statement?
Destiny 2 is a first-person shooter. In addition to the excellent gameplay, three important factors enhance the “Destiny” experience:
- Destiny 2 is a loot shooter – the many weapons with their amazing feeling and armor make up a large part of the fascination. There’s always a carrot dangling in front of you that you’ll willingly chase after.
- Destiny 2 offers a solid RPG element. Your characters, called Guardians, belong to different classes and have powerful and crazy abilities like a “Dragon Ball” Kamehameha or the lightning fingers of the evil Emperor from Star Wars.
- Destiny 2 strongly focuses on the connection between social aspects and gameplay. You can team up with friends, and nearly all activities have integrated player searches. Most content can still be tackled solo.
Destiny 2 offers entertaining gameplay
20 hours campaign for 0 Euros: Destiny 2 offers several campaigns with cool cutscenes and many missions. If you focus only on the first campaign, you’ll be entertained for over 10 hours.
No prior knowledge is necessary because at the start of the story, your enemies basically destroy everything that Destiny veterans knew from the first game, and everyone starts together from scratch.
There are no costs involved. Destiny 2 is completely free to play as “New Light” with massive content on all platforms – that’s PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia.
Afterwards, you can tackle 2 more smaller campaigns. You’ll be entertained for about 20 hours as in a pure single-player shooter, and you can then turn your back on Destiny 2 or stay and dive deeper into the Destiny universe. This way, you will discover why the game fascinates millions of gamers worldwide.
This is in the free version: Destiny New Light offers a wealth of content for every type of player:
- You can face computer-controlled enemies in PvE, complete quests for special items and weapons, team up with comrades on missions, or even wreak havoc in challenging raids with 6 allies.
- If you prefer to compete against other human players in PvP, you have access to a wide variety of modes and events for quick matches or competitive battles.
- If you can’t decide, you can mix PvE and PvP. The Gambit mode allows for this as well.
You can pick the cherries that suit your taste. And spend hundreds of hours only in the modes that you really enjoy. Fortunately, you can strengthen your Guardian in all modes and thus show off in other areas of Destiny with your new weapons and abilities.
Are you at a disadvantage with the free version? In short: No! You can reach the same maximum level as all Destiny players and also enter and explore all planets. This makes it possible to easily play with your friends, even if they have been playing Destiny 2 for years.
Even in the current seasons of Destiny 2, you are allowed to participate in many seasonal activities and level up the season pass for free to unlock some of the trendiest weapons and armor.
How popular is Destiny 2 at the moment: In March, Destiny 2 ranked second among the most played MMOs on Steam. On average, over 70,000 Guardians were online on Steam, with a peak of almost 120,000 players in Destiny.

How do new contents come into the game? Currently, Destiny 2 follows a so-called season model. This involves thematic episodes that bring new loot and fresh activities. Unlike the DLCs, the contents are presented to Guardians over several months. This provides constant new incentives to play.
In terms of scope, the seasons are smaller than the major expansions, but they cost around 10 € for 3 months and make a part of the new content available for free to all players.
Currently, Season 10, the Season of Worthy, is running and requires Guardians to collaborate with a dangerous ally to stop a threat from orbit. The Destiny head quoted at the beginning has already presented grand plans for the future and stated that Destiny 2 will continue to evolve in 2020.
This is how I fell in love with Destiny: My Destiny career started completely unplanned. I knew almost nothing about the MMO genre in advance and had only played in classic multiplayer modes with or against others.
In a trio, we just shot away in Destiny 1, not giving it much thought. But it quickly became clear that the Destiny universe is something special. The different weapons felt different, and everyone developed their own playstyle. The beautiful thing about it: all paths lead to the goal and invite experimentation.
Quickly, it went from the initial forays to raids and even to the initially intimidating PvP. Today, I feel at home and comfortable in all areas of Destiny. Therefore, from my personal perspective, I can only recommend that everyone experiences the same beautiful experiences. Maybe you will also fall in love with Destiny.
