Do you enjoy teasing Lazarus in Baldur’s Gate 3? If you go too far, there can now be very dramatic consequences.
The latest patch of Baldur’s Gate 3 has brought many changes. Most notably, the end of the game is now more rounded and has a few new sequences that give the entire game a worthy conclusion. However, you also have ways to ruin this conclusion – if you don’t adhere to the host’s rules. For even Lazarus’ patience has limits.
Spoiler warning: If you have not experienced the new ending of Baldur’s Gate 3 and want to play it yourself, you should not read on.
What happens at the end? After the original ending of Baldur’s Gate 3, under certain conditions, there is a big farewell party. Here, Lazarus invites you and throws a massive party in your camp. This is a good moment to say goodbye to everyone and reflect on the long adventure one last time.
As is fitting for Baldur’s Gate 3, you also have almost complete freedom at this party and can cause plenty of chaos – at least up to a certain limit. Because if you do not behave, Lazarus will intervene.
What does Lazarus do at the party? For the most part, Lazarus tolerates your nonsense. However, the limit is crossed as soon as you actually kill any guest at the party. In that case, a cutscene begins immediately, where Lazarus slowly approaches your character and shows great disappointment.
In the subreddit of Baldur’s Gate 3, Camilams showed this scene:
He reprimands you for ruining “his party” and is finally fed up with your behavior. In a heartbeat, he opens a portal and hurls you through it, banishing you not only from the party but also from the world.
No, you don’t even get a saving throw against this attack – you are banished from the world without the possibility of resistance. That’s how powerful Lazarus is.
Who is Lazarus? Lazarus, or in English “Withers,” mostly plays a supporting role. You find him early in Act 1 and he is basically a “safety net” to ensure you can complete your game. He resurrects fallen allies or provides you with mercenary replacements if you have scared off all the “real” companions. Additionally, you can reset your talents and class with him. On top of that, he is invulnerable – no matter what you do, he takes no damage and simply smiles at your efforts.
This makes Lazarus seem more like a game mechanic and less like an NPC in the game world – but that is misleading.
Who Lazarus really is, we have explained in this article.
