The Xbox boss spoke in an interview about the Xbox Series X. If it were up to him, the Xbox controller would get a feature borrowed from the PS5. But until that feature arrives, it might still take a while.
You love gaming on your new Xbox Series X, but so far you’re missing the features that the new DualSense controller from Sony offers? If Xbox boss Phil Spencer has his way, such a feature could also come to Xbox.
What does Phil Spencer say? Already at the end of 2020, Xbox boss Spencer praised the device and explained why he finds the PS5 controller so good.
In the latest “Kinda Funny Gamescast” on YouTube, he reiterated his praise and explained that the DualSense controller plays an important role for Xbox (via YouTube.com).
We are definitely thinking about different types of devices that can bring more games to more places. We will probably also work on the [Xbox] controller. I think Sony has done a good job with its controller, and we are looking at some of that and [thinking] that there are things we should do.
Phil Spencer, Xbox boss.
Which features are we talking about? The PS5 DualSense controller has two special features that the Xbox controller does not currently offer.
- First, there’s haptic feedback: It should make you feel what kind of surface you’re on or with what intensity you kick a ball or reload a weapon.
- Adaptive triggers are the second feature: The shoulder buttons can create different levels of resistance when pressed or can block when you can’t reload your weapon in the game.

When could such a feature come? In the same conversation, Spencer explains that it could still take some time before gamers have an improved Xbox controller in hand.
Because, as Spencer explains, “[we are] probably not currently able to develop custom accessories. We are just looking at what is happening with Windows and elsewhere and seeing if there’s a unique opportunity for us.”
What plans does Microsoft have for 2021? Microsoft recently unveiled the open beta for the Xbox cloud service, which you can try out for free with a Game Pass subscription. This would open up a ton of new possibilities for the Xbox cloud service, Spencer explains in an interview with the British Guardian (Theguardian.com).
If we can stream to any device – a PC or a phone – we can really think about how we can do more of these types of early access experiences, sometimes even as a funding model for creatives.
Another important topic for Microsoft this year is the newly announced Windows 11. Many users are already excited about what they can expect with the upgrade to the operating system.
With the acquisition of Bethesda, many major games are also coming to Xbox. For example, the new game Starfield is exclusive to PC and Xbox, and the Bethesda boss explained why it is good that Starfield is not coming to the PS5.
What do you think? Would you be excited about a future upgrade for the Xbox controller, or are you satisfied with the device as it already is?
