The start of Season 22 in Diablo 3 is actually a reason for joy for our editor Patrick Freese. But for him, it should have come a week earlier.
For years, I have regularly played the Seasons of Diablo 3 and have always been there right from the start. It is always a celebration for me when all my friends are suddenly online in the Diablo world and everyone starts together from scratch.
What is the problem? The new Season 22 starts on November 20. This has now been officially announced by the Diablo team. However, for me and some other Blizzard fans, the date is not cool at all.
Because on November 24, the Shadowlands expansion for World of Warcraft launches. And sorry, but I absolutely cannot miss that start. And I probably won’t be the only Blizzard player who has to choose between these two events.
Season 22 will only keep me for a few days – and I find that a shame
What makes Season 22 special? For every new Season in Diablo 3, the developers come up with something that makes it special. Usually, these are special bonuses that have a significant impact on gameplay.
In S22, we have
- Shadow clones
- a fourth slot in Kanai’s Cube
- plenty of balance changes
- New items
- All new sets from Haedrig’s Gifts

What is different this time? Normally, I play a Season of Diablo 3 extensively for about two to three weeks, and then the interest gradually wanes. Cool pets like this one from Season 20 motivate me to complete the season. After that, I come back every few days to refine my gear or play a new class.
But all of that will come much shorter this time. When Shadowlands starts on Tuesday (and the servers are functioning), I will switch to that game and stay there for several weeks.
For me, a Season start in Diablo 3 a week earlier would have been much better. Then I could have fully experienced the start, could have sunk several hours into it, and then, once the initial hype has died down, could have migrated to Shadowlands without a guilty conscience. But no, this time I will probably have to abandon the Season after about four days. That’s a shame.
Because you should definitely try the cool contents of Season 22.
Why am I going to WoW?
Nostalgia, friends, community: WoW is an old love of mine. Although I didn’t play back then during Classic, I started with the first expansion, Burning Crusade. The reason was that practically everyone played it, and my best friend said I should at least give it a try. Then his brother was also there, and suddenly I found myself in a guild, and there was this feeling of connection.
Since then, my relationship with WoW has been an on-and-off affair. I regularly have a subscription going again, check in to see what’s happened in the latest patches, level up a few twinks with friends, and have fun.
But I have never missed an expansion release. I just love it when the starting areas are full of players because everyone wants to try the “new” thing. Everyone explores together what Blizzard has created for the WoW community. What crazy NPCs have been created and what stories they have to tell. My friends, who already played Burning Crusade with me, are also waiting for me again.
And sorry, Diablo 3. But a new Season really cannot compete with the launch of WoW: Shadowlands for me. Therefore, the question of who gets my attention is redundant.
Can’t both be done? I considered whether I can play both simultaneously. And yes, I can play something else alongside a Diablo season. But nothing that goes as deep as an expansion in World of Warcraft. That just consumes all my attention.
Sure, when the WoW servers are once again bursting at the seams due to overload and there are huge queues like in WoW Classic, then it makes sense to take a detour into the hack and slash world. But otherwise? It will probably take a few weeks after the launch of Shadowlands until I stick my nose back into Diablo 3.
