MeinMMO editor Noah Struthoff is a complete novice in MMORPGs. Therefore, his impression of the huge EVE Online was all the more exciting, especially because there is actually a space world war going on there.
This is my stance on MMORPGs: To be honest, I had avoided this genre for most of my life. My first encounters were with Guild Wars 2, when I played it for an experience report.
Now, a second MMORPG was on my radar: EVE Online. Developer CCP Games had invited MeinMMO to a noob tour, and I knew exactly that I was the perfect candidate for it. Páll Grétar Bjarnason, known as Palli by everyone, from the Icelandic developer guided me through the MMORPG and showed me the first steps in EVE Online for about an hour and a half. I just watched, but I still had a lot of fun.
Only friendly players, despite a huge space war
This is what I knew about EVE Online so far: Before the request came, I admittedly knew very little about EVE Online. I kept hearing that there are huge factions there and that they are even currently stuck in a huge war.
This is how the initial experience went: Will I enter a game where factions will fight each other everywhere, and I will totally drown as a newbie?
Surprisingly not! Everything was peaceful, and Palli showed me the in-game chat, which was very friendly. There is even a dedicated group where newbies could ask questions, and helpful players were ready to assist.
So, even if I didn’t have Palli by my side, I would have found a way to ask my questions.
During the tutorial, we had to master several steps that brought us our first rewards and explained the basic mechanics of EVE Online. We fought against NPCs, and through mining, we extracted resources which we ultimately crafted into weapons and sold.
I was amazed that there are so many different possibilities in the MMORPG, and I definitely haven’t seen everything yet. For a player like me, who primarily plays fixed stories, that was already a big difference.
EVE is incredibly vast – and that’s what makes it so brilliant!
This impressed me the most: What struck me first and still impresses me is the vast game world of EVE Online. Palli explained to me that you can only progress through quick travels because if you tried to fly everywhere with your spaceship, you would probably never reach your destination. One player even made it into the Guinness Book of Records for that.
For me, who already considers the world of GTA 5 to be vast, it is actually unimaginable. Maybe that’s why we didn’t experience the space war. If the game world is so huge, the chance of encountering another player is not very high – unless you are looking for them specifically.
But not only the game world is immense. You can choose from countless ships, which you can then equip with a ton of weapons.
So what’s going on with the world war? I asked Palli as well. After all, I thought everything would be on fire here. He casually yet excitedly replied that it is a very interesting topic and he is also eagerly following it.
There are several factions that have gotten into disputes with each other. Alliances have been broken and now it has come to war. But this is not unusual in EVE Online. Such actions happen repeatedly there, and they can easily consume several hundred thousand euros.
Assessment: Impressive expanses and much to discover
EVE Online is an impressive game for me, as both the scale and the community are something entirely new.
After meeting with Palli, I was already itching to dive into the MMORPG over the next few weeks. After all, it’s free, and a massive war in a game sounds extremely exciting to me.
Admittedly, I haven’t quite grasped some mechanics in EVE Online yet, but I also know that I have friendly players who will surely answer these questions for me.
The possibilities in the game seem limitless to me, and thus I can only conclude with my favorite space ranger Buzz Lightyear: “To infinity and beyond!”
