An enemy thought to be dead in World of Warcraft could return in Midnight. At least there are clear hints.
World of Warcraft announced a few hours ago that the intro cinematic for “Midnight” will be shown at GamesCom 2025. Most fans were already aware of this beforehand, but a new artwork that was also released provided plenty of room for theories.
The image depicts the Void’s attack on Azeroth – and the shadowy silhouette of something in the background, allowing for multiple interpretations.
What is this artwork? The artwork shows five creatures resembling voidwalkers. The colors belong to the “cosmic void,” which Blizzard has teased in recent patches. Among the shadows of the environment, parts of the architecture of the blood elves can be seen, and a massive whirl of blue-black smoke reaches into the sky while void projectiles crash down.
N’Zoth or Silvermoon – A Detail with Multiple Interpretations
What is particularly interesting is a small detail. In the background of the image, in the lighter smoke, the outline of a structure can be seen.
My first thought was: There is only one being in World of Warcraft that has this body shape. N’Zoth, the Old God.
Years ago, Blizzard announced recurring enemies as silhouettes in the darkness, even Xal’atath was the case.
Therefore, my reaction was: This must be N’Zoth. Finally, it is revealed that the Old God is not really dead, as has been suspected for many years. He reappears and plays a major role in Midnight.
After all, the outline perfectly fits the shape of the Old God. Two towering spikes reaching into the sky with a rounded shape, split in the middle.
This can only be N’Zoth. My shadow priest has already celebrated a joyful inner descent into madness.
At least for an hour. Because then someone pointed out:
“I don’t think that is N’Zoth. That looks like the Sunspire Tower of Silvermoon.”
Unfortunately, I must admit: Yes, that would fit too. Because the shape could simply be the top of the Sunspire Tower. My disappointment was immense and my day ruined.
But hey, I won’t give up hope. Because maybe Blizzard chose this shadowy depiction intentionally. Perhaps the fog is intentionally a bit ambiguous. At least, I hold onto the hope that we will see something from N’Zoth again. Because Blizzard has put too much work into its story in recent months to really let him stay dead …
Are there more clues? Yes, there are. Because although N’Zoth’s story was supposed to find an end with the conclusion of Battle for Azeroth, it really didn’t. Because even in the “Dragonflight” expansion, N’Zoth got new voice lines that showed us once again: The Old God is far too clever to have simply died in Battle for Azeroth. Because he knew what was coming.
Moreover, Blizzard took the trouble to hide a few new motivations of N’Zoth in the new “Lorewalking” questline around Xal’atath. That all of this was only created retroactively and that the Old God does not appear at all seems rather unlikely. At least in my tentacle clouded eyes.
