What kind of game is this? New Frontier is the reboot of the western MMO Wild West Online. In the sandbox MMO, you can freely express yourself, follow the law or break it, become a bounty hunter or dig for gold.
The game resembled Red Dead Redemption 2 heavily and was therefore – and due to an unfinished version – harshly criticized by players.
After a phase in which the game was taken offline, it returned in two versions:
- New Frontier includes the open world of the game
- Magnificent 5, on the other hand, is a battle royale of WWO
How is New Frontier doing currently? New Frontier had a weak launch on Steam. At peak, it had 921 concurrent players (via Steamcharts). In the last 30 days, it managed to average 0.4 concurrent players, reaching a peak of merely 2!
The reviews for the game are mixed, with a boring world and few tasks in the game being repeatedly criticized. Recently, however, there haven’t been any new reviews.
That’s why I believe New Frontier will die in 2023: The original version Wild West Online could not convince and despite players’ keen interest in a Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC and thus a western game.
Since RDR2 has been released for PC, it seems unlikely that New Frontier will be able to compete against it in any way. Therefore, I expect the shutdown of the MMO in 2023.
