For the sci-fi movie Edge of Tomorrow, both lead actors Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt had to endure a lot physically. They had to prepare for their roles with intense training to meet the high demands of the shoot.
What kind of movie is Edge of Tomorrow? The sci-fi film directed by Doug Liman was released in 2014 and revolves around Major Bill Cage (played by Tom Cruise), who dies in battle against aliens and then becomes stuck in a time loop.
Time and again, he relives the fateful day and tries to find a way, together with Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt), to defeat the aliens once and for all.
Not only did the roles themselves pose a challenge, but a specific outfit also represented a significant physical challenge for the actors, for which they prepared intensively.

Tom Cruise as a committed training partner
Emily Blunt trained for 3 months, 6 days a week, to prepare for Edge of Tomorrow. From yoga to weightlifting, everything was included – even martial arts training.
“I even learned Krav Maga, a deadly martial art where you use pretty much everything, including your teeth, to destroy,” Blunt said. “It was a lot of fun.”
She not only trained alone but also together with her co-star Tom Cruise. Director Doug Liman believed that this gave her one of the best training partners ever for the film.
He praised Cruise’s hard work and was impressed by how dedicated the actor was:
She had the big advantage of having Tom Cruise as a training partner. I have never seen anyone prepare physically as hard for a role as Tom Cruise.

Why was the film so challenging? As Tom Cruise explained to USA Today Live, even the exoskeleton suits that the actors wore in the film posed a big challenge.
“One of the suits with the angel wings had a sniper rifle and a rocket launcher on the back and weighed about 130 pounds [38 kg]. I had to sprint in it. It was physically demanding.”
