Comfort
Ergonomics: I have relatively small ears and had difficulty in the test perfectly adjusting the comfort for my ears. The 3 silicone tips theoretically provide enough leeway.
In the test, the in-ears do not stay fully in the ear. Especially with a quick movement to the side, or when I bend down, the in-ears tend to become “independent.” I also never feel that the in-ears sit completely securely in my ears. I therefore regularly push them back in to ensure they sit properly in my ear.
Moreover, I miss soft rubber in the ear bone area to cushion the pressure of the in-ears somewhat. Other manufacturers such as Soundcore or Sennheiser have integrated this already. After a few hours, the HyperX headphones become painfully pressing.
Additional functions: The touch function can be debated. I can hardly make use of it with most in-ear headphones because for me the touch function is simply too sensitive in most cases.
The same applies to the Cloud Mix Buds. Normally, they register my touches but also pick up all other movements. So, if the wind pushes the jacket against the headphones, or if my hair touches the in-ears. At least you can easily turn off the touch function.
Sound Quality
The sound is good, but without any real sonic highlights. The manufacturer advertises with 12mm drivers in the in-ears; my Sennheiser in-ears with 7–mm drivers sound significantly better.
The typical sound quality that I am used to from HyperX headsets is certainly not achieved by the in-ears. The sound is, as expected, bass-heavy and thus also targets gamers who enjoy heavy explosions.
The advertised DTS:X surround sound is not available on mobile phones, but only on desktop PCs. Here, you can install the sound package through the HyperX PC app. This is offered to me directly when starting the app on the PC, but I can also refuse the installation.
The surround sound works well but is somewhat limited.
For fast gaming on PC and console, the sound with the dongle is definitely sufficient. The low latency also helps to convince me in everyday use. My Sennheiser in-ear headphones fall short here. Especially in fast games like the music game “Muse Dash”, I notice every delay with Sennheiser. This is a plus point for the HyperX in-ears, where I (almost) don’t feel the delay.
However, the manufacturer states that high-quality codecs such as Qualcomm’s aptX are not included. However, supported are HSP.TS, IOPT, A2DP, AVRCP, GAVDP, DID, HFP, and HSP.
Battery Life, Microphone and Connection
Battery Life: The battery life is just under 10 hours. The charging time is about 2 hours until the in-ears are fully charged. The battery life is a strong plus for the in-ears. With the charging case, the manufacturer claims up to 33 hours of usage. For everyday use, this is completely sufficient. The in-ears are charged via the case, and the case itself is easily charged via USB-C.
Microphone: The built-in microphone is okay and practical for simple conversations or quick commands. However, do not expect too much. The microphone is quite noisy and can only handle interference noises to a limited extent. With a proper headset or a dedicated microphone, you would be better off.
Connection: The connection via dongle and Bluetooth remained stable throughout. However, I sometimes had the issue that one of the two in-ear headphones was not recognized or was connected late. Once the connection worked, it remained stable over time.
Conclusion: A lot of wasted potential and overshadowed by better competition
For whom are the in-ears worthwhile? The most interesting feature of the HyperX Cloud Mix Buds is their wide compatibility, and they also show their strengths on the PS5. If you are looking for good in-ears for the console, you will indeed find them here, as the sound is quite good.
Since February 14, 2023, the in-ears are also quite recommendable for mobile users, but they should still be used with caution.

What alternatives are there? In my opinion, the better gaming alternative remains the EPOS GTW 270 with dongle. With aptX, higher quality processing, and significantly greater wearing comfort, the EPOS product far outweighs the model from HyperX. And the EPOS model can already be had for around 100 euros, while the price of the HyperX Cloud Mix Buds is rather around 130 euros on sale.
