Bring Your Story to Life
Another reason why we are all still as passionately involved after years as we were on the first day is that we take our stories and characters with us into real life. Because when we finish a session, the story is far from paused for us.
Even when we are not playing, we exchange thoughts about the story, the ideas, desires, and emotions of our characters, the backstories of NPCs, and story theories. This helps bridge the waits between sessions and maintain the connection. We also write a shared chronicle for each session, which we can always refer back to.
Additionally, we get creatively involved in other ways by drawing iconic scenes, writing short stories, recreating items from the story, or creating props and clues for upcoming sessions.
If you have less creative and crafting talents, you can also create mood boards or playlists with songs and images that help immerse you in the story or visualize places and characters. Your creativity knows no bounds.
Yes, all of this takes a lot of time and is certainly not feasible for every group to such an extent, but even small efforts suffice to stay engaged and maintain and deepen the tension and connection to your own created uni- or multiverse of the story. On the other hand, tabletop role-playing games generally require more time investment to engage in.
These were our main reasons that drive us and ensure that we have been tirelessly and passionately following our campaign for years. Whether the story you are part of appeals to you or what expectations you place on it is primarily dependent on you and your group.
