I adore my baby sister, but I once couldn't help myself and tormented her in Pokémon

As a child, I often played pranks on my little sister. These included the typical hiding and scaring, but also some more elaborate pranks. In retrospect, I don’t even know why I did that, but it was probably some subconscious brother thing.

When she played Pokémon LeafGreen for the first time, I simply couldn’t help myself. I spoiled the first evolution of her Squirtle with just one wrong tip.

The most beautiful moment of any game

Which button is it? One of the most beautiful moments, especially as a child, is in Pokémon games when you evolve your starter. Back then, there was no widespread internet reporting, so you often didn’t know what the cute Squirtle or Charmander would turn into.

The games themselves celebrate this with a beautiful animation. However, if you press B in FireRed and other titles in the series, this is stopped and the Squirtle stays a Squirtle. As mean as I was, I told my sister that you MUST press B for it to evolve.

She believed me, as I had more experience in the game. But she quickly realized that I had lied to her. Of course, the Pokémon evolves again at the next level-up, but trust was forever broken – at least when it comes to Pokémon games.

But, it can also be worthwhile not to evolve a Pokémon: While Pokémon usually get better stats upon evolution, if you want to use a certain attack earlier, it might be worth evolving it later.

For instance, Squirtle learns Hydro Pump at level 47 in the 3rd generation (Source: Pokewiki), while Blastoise learns it only from level 68 (Source: Pokewiki).

If you plan to do something like that, it’s better to use a Everstone. If a Pokémon holds this item, it won’t evolve every level. In some titles of the franchise like Pokémon GO, Legends Arceus, or Legends Z-A, you need to actively select evolutions in the menu once the requirements are met.
