On November 10th, the new generation of Xbox consoles was released. MeinMMO editor Alexander Leitsch now has an Xbox Series S at home. He made his first attempts with it over the weekend and failed miserably.
What is my stance on consoles? The Xbox Series S is my first console since the PlayStation 2. I got it as a gift from my parents in 2001 and I was thrilled back then. However, over the years, it became clear where my true passion in gaming lies: in MMORPGs.
For a long time, online role-playing games were played almost exclusively on the PC. Black Desert was only released for consoles in 2019 – 3 years after the PC release. So for years, the PC was either completely overhauled or gradually upgraded.
But with the Xbox Series S, a budget-friendly new console was launched. And since I already own a Game Pass subscription for PC, it intrigued me immensely:
- On one hand, I can finally get out of my home office where I work and play at the same time.
- On the other hand, since my last move, I have a brand new couch – and that needs to be used too!
What happened? Last weekend, I finally got to use the Xbox Series S extensively. I downloaded FIFA and ESO and was convinced that I, just like on the PC, would dominate the games.
But my first rounds with the matching controller were primarily one thing: pathetic!
Lost in FIFA 20, even though I’m decent on PC
How did the first rounds go? Aside from a few gaming conventions, I last held a controller in 2005. I can say that precisely because my PS2 fell from its hanging fixture and shattered on the floor back then.
Since then, I’ve been playing almost exclusively on PC or smartphone. But that didn’t stop me from going full throttle right away. I started a round of FIFA 20, which is also included for free in the Game Pass. On PC, I play FIFA, probably as the only person in the world, with a keyboard!
However, I can usually win against the AI on World Class difficulty easily and on Legendary with some effort. So what could possibly go wrong on the console? I set the difficulty to World Class and got started. My first game ended in a loss of 1:3 – against an AI….
Shortly after, I played a casual kickoff match against a colleague. I don’t even want to describe how miserably I lost, but it was a double-digit score!
What’s the problem? I am actually having incredible difficulty controlling a controller. At first, I struggled to differentiate between X and Y. The shoulder buttons, which are commonly set for player switching and sprinting, did not fit my playstyle at all.
I quickly found myself wishing for my gaming keyboard back, which I had become accustomed to over the past 15 years.
Once multiplayer, always multiplayer
Why am I apologizing here? For years, I have actually only been playing multiplayer games. My focus is mainly on games where you play together, such as MMORPGs or team-based PvP games like LoL or Conqueror’s Blade.
I have also focused on multiplayer games with the Xbox Series S. And of course, I will be playing it extensively in the coming weeks.
Therefore, I already feel sorry if you accidentally end up in my group. Because with the controller, I am an absolute noob and will surely not make your gaming experience more enjoyable. You might find me especially in ESO, Black Desert, or maybe even in a shooter.
How this turns out is written in the stars. Perhaps I will soon be so frustrated that I will just connect a mouse and a keyboard to the console!
