After a long wait, GTA 6 finally delighted the fans with a second trailer. MeinMMO editor Nikolas Hernes was also surprised because he didn’t really care about the series. But after the new information, he can hardly wait to play as Lucia and Jason.
It almost sounds blasphemous to say: GTA has never really interested me. I particularly felt this during GTA 5. I like the approach of having 3 different protagonists. But aside from Franklin, I found the trio unbearable. The protagonists are simply unsympathetic to me.
The gameplay has never really made me go click
. The incredible chaos you can create in the open world is fun, but after 2 hours it wears off. Not to mention GTA Online, which I find unbearable.
Then on Tuesday, the 2nd trailer for GTA 6 was released, and instead of focusing on the absurd characters and incidents in the city, it mainly shows the protagonists Lucia and Jason. And what can I say: I can’t wait for the release!
Normal
characters are scarce in GTA
Why are the protagonists in GTA 6 so special? Well, they actually aren’t. They seem like normal people under the circumstances. At least if you believe the new trailer and the new information on the Rockstar website.
In any other game, Lucia and Jason would leave me cold. A love couple in the style of Bonnie and Clyde? Sounds like it’s been told before. But this normality is unusual in the series and particularly refreshing after the 5th installment.
GTA usually focuses on absurd characters that function like caricatures of real people or large clichés. While I really enjoy this in series like The Boys, it bothered me in the context of GTA 5. I just can’t relate to Trevor and Michael. There is no character I can empathize with.
However, with GTA 6, this seems to change, and this is already shown by a very simple moment in the trailer: Lucia apparently comes home from work while Jason is lying on the couch watching TV. She lies down next to him and takes a short break.
This is a small moment that most can empathize with, and it shows the great potential.
A romantic story can also work in GTA
Lucia and Jason are trapped in a hole full of crime. That’s nothing special; that’s all GTA protagonists. But on the official website, Rockstar adds a bit of spice to them.
Amid a criminal conspiracy that spans the entire state of Leonida, they are forced to rely on each other more than ever to survive.
By playing a love couple here, the focus of the story changes because with the crimes, possible heists, and criminal adversaries, not only a business relationship is at stake, but a romantic one.
For this setup to work, the writers must convey the characters’ motivations well. According to the website, Lucia and Jason do not want to become the new Scarface or Don of the city. They want to survive and lead a comfortable life.
Throughout the story, the relationship also needs to be explored. The trailer seems to suggest that as well. It’s not just about exciting or dramatic moments; sometimes you also need a scene where both awkwardly say Hey
.
But the chaos must remain
At the beginning, I complained about the chaos, but now I want exactly that because of Lucia and Jason. They could be the perfect contrast to the over-the-top GTA world because you don’t have to say goodbye to outrageous characters.
With characters like Real Dimez or Cal Hampton, you know: The exaggerated caricatures that mock social issues and clichés are back. But surprisingly, I’m totally on board with this.
This feeling of being in a world full of decisions and news that you just can’t believe or want to, is something many know today, and that’s exactly how it feels when I look at Lucia and Jason in the insane world of GTA 6.
