With Hyper Universe, we are expecting the first interesting release of 2018 – and the game really packs a punch, as it combines brawler action with MOBA.
As typical for a MOBA, you choose one of 40 different heroes to embody. Each character has different abilities that you can also – typical for the genre – improve over time. However, the battles play out differently than one might be used to.
Brawling in the MOBA
The game is played in a 4v4 mode. Each team selects a hero and then meets on a battlefield, which can be viewed from a side-scrolling perspective, just like in a beat-em-up. And just like in a fighting game, it gets intense. You beat up your enemies in real time and use your heroes’ special abilities. The goal is to destroy the enemy towers and the opposing team.
It is important that you assemble your team wisely, as there are a total of six classes (including melee fighters, ranged fighters, and support classes), all of which have specific roles. Each class includes several heroes. Build your team in a way that allows for good cooperation to eliminate the opponents. Additionally, there is a mode where everyone fights against everyone, which can end in absolute chaos.
Variety and Surprises
The levels provide interesting opportunities for ambushes or surprise attacks. You should always pay attention to what is happening around you, or you might be surprised by an enemy coming down from a trapdoor in the ceiling. During the battles, you collect gold, which you can use to improve your items and become even more powerful.
Hyper Universe launches on January 17 via Steam. Since August, an early access phase has been taking place, allowing the developers to gather a lot of feedback for improvements. To access the early access phase, you need to pay; on January 17, 2018, the title is set to be released as a free-to-play game.
Due to the breasts of the female characters in Hyper Universe, there was some controversy last year.
