Many players are slowly reaching the point in WoW Classic where they need to prepare for their first raids or have already gained some experience. For those who still need help, we will show you here how to start and complete the questline for Onyxia.
Why is the quest necessary? You need to complete the questline surrounding Onyxia if you want to enter the raid “Onyxia’s Lair”. At the end, you will receive a necklace that you must wear to be allowed in.
Although Onyxia as well as Ragnaros fell just a few days after the release of WoW Classic, many players are only now arriving at the raids. The questline to be able to fight Onyxia is quite long and the start is somewhat hidden.
Our tip: Start the questline already in the leveling phase. This way you can complete the quests and gain experience in the many dungeons that you must conquer and for completing the quests.
The Onyxia questline for the Horde
Where does the quest start? As a Horde player, you start your quest at level 55 in the Badlands. Visit your base “Kargath” all the way in the west. In Kargath, you will find Warlord Goretooth, with whom you need to speak.
However, Goretooth will not give you a quest. Still, speak with him, and you will receive a letter from him directly into your inventory. This letter starts the quest “Warlord’s Command”, for which you need to kill three bosses in Lower Blackrock Spire.
In addition, you need to obtain the “Important Blackrock Documents”, which can be located at four different spots in Lower Blackrock Spire:
- at the feet of Overlord Wyrmthalak
- in an alcove next to War Master Voone
- near Highlord Omokk
- next to the offerings for Urok
What comes next in the questline? After you complete “Warlord’s Command” and turn it in to Warlord Goretooth in the Badlands, several more quests follow. We will show you shortly what they are called and what you need to do:
- Part 2 – Eitrigg’s Wisdom: Speak with Eitrigg in Thrall’s chambers (start at Warlord Goretooth, end at Thrall in Orgrimmar).
- Part 3 – For the Horde! Kill Rend Blackhand in Upper Blackrock Spire and bring his head to Thrall (start and end at Thrall).
- Part 4 – What the Wind Tells: Listen to Thrall.
- Part 5 – The Champion of the Horde: Find Rexxar. Rexxar roams in Desolace between Feralas and the Stonetalon Mountains (start at Thrall, end at Rexxar).
- Part 6 – Message from Rexxar: Bring Rexxar’s Testament (provided) to Myranda the Kinswoman in the Western Plaguelands (start at Rexxar, end at Myranda the Kinswoman in the Western Plaguelands).
- Part 7 – Oculus Illusions: Collect 20 Black Dragon Whelp Eyes from dragons in Blackrock Spire (start and end at Myranda).
- Part 8 – Ashwing: Equip the Amulet of Draconic Subversion (provided neckpiece) and speak with Ashwing in the Marshes of Dustwallow (start at Myranda, end at Ashwing in the Marshes).
- Part 9-12 – The Trials of the Skull: Complete three trials for Ashwing. You will need to kill four Elite/Boss dragons: Chronalis in Tanaris, Scryer in Winterspring, and Somnus in the Swamps of Sorrows. You will then receive the final test, for which you will need to kill Axtroz in the Swamp (start and end at Ashwing).
- Part 13 – Ascent… Bring the Dull Dragonfire Amulet (provided) to Rexxar.
- Part 14 – Blood of the Black Dragon Hero: Kill General Drakkisath in Upper Blackrock Spire and bring his blood to Rexxar.
For completing this last quest, you will receive the “Dragonfire Amulet”, with which you can now enter Onyxia’s Lair.
The Onyxia questline for the Alliance
Where does the quest start? Unlike the Horde, you can start the questline on the Alliance side already at level 48. Search for Helendis Riverhorn in the Burning Steppes and accept the quest “Dragonkin Threat”. Riverhorn is located in a camp in the southeastern part of the map.
For the quest, you need to kill several dragons:
- 15 Black Whelplings
- 10 Black Dragons (Elite)
- 4 Black Wyrmkin (Elite)
- one Black Dragon (Elite)
All dragons can be found to the north of Helendis, scattered across the steppe, at the edge of the eastern mountains.
What comes next in the questline? The Alliance starts the questline with a whole series of errand boy quests. So be prepared for a lot of running:
- Part 2-7 – The True Masters: Deliver the message from Helendis Riverhorn to Magistrate Solomon in the Redridge Mountains. Turn in the quest and then bring the help request to Highlord Bolvar Fordragon in Stormwind. Complete the quest again and then speak with Lady Katrana Prestor directly next to him. Bring the received decree back to Magistrate Solomon. Complete the quest and take the next one to be sent to the Burning Steppes to Marshal Maxwell. Speak with the scruffy John for the next quest and listen to his story.
- Part 8 – Marshal Windsor: Find Marshal Windsor in the Blackrock Depths. He is located in one of the prison cells (start at Marshal Maxwell, end at Marshal Windsor).
- Part 9 – Lost Hope: Speak with Marshal Maxwell (start at Marshal Windsor, end at Marshal Maxwell).
- Part 10 – A Crumpled Note: This step requires patience. From now on, every enemy in the Blackrock Depths has a chance to drop “a crumpled note.” Farm the enemies and pick up the note to start the quest. Bring the note to Marshal Windsor, who is still in prison.
- Part 11 – A Glimmer of Hope: Kill General Doomsmith and Golem Lord Argelmach in the Blackrock Depths. Retrieve the information from them and bring it back (start and end at Marshal Windsor).
- Part 12 – Prison Break: Escort Windsor out of the Blackrock Depths. Be well prepared, as you will be ambushed several times (start at Marshal Windsor, end at Marshal Maxwell).
- Part 13 – Meeting in Stormwind: Speak with Reginald Windsor at the gates of Stormwind (start at Marshal Maxwell, end at Reginald Windsor in Stormwind).
- Part 14 – The Great Masquerade: Escort Windsor through Stormwind. At the end, you must fight Lady Katrana Prestor, now in her true form as Onyxia, as well as several Elite Dragonkin. The guards will help you (start at Reginald Windsor, end at Highlord Bolvar Fordragon in Stormwind).
- Part 15 – The Great Dragon Eye: Bring the fragment of the Great Dragon Eye to Haleh in Winterspring (start at Highlord Bolvar Fordragon, end at Haleh in Winterspring, southwest of Everlook).
- Part 16 – Dragonfire Amulet: Kill General Drakkisath in Upper Blackrock Spire and bring the blood of a black dragon hero to Haleh (start and end at Haleh).
For completing this last quest, you will receive the “Dragonfire Amulet”, with which you can now enter Onyxia’s Lair.
