How to find perfect pelts in RDR 2?
The choice of weapon: To obtain perfect pelts in Red Dead Redemption 2, the choice of weapon is crucial. Of course, if you blow a small rabbit away with a shotgun, the pelt will be riddled with holes. This is suitable at most for a summer collection. Rare pelts will be extremely rare to find as a result.
If you pay attention to the right weapon, you will farm many of the coveted pelts. Some players are surprised by how brutal hunting in RDR 2 is.
For hunting perfect pelts, it is best to use a weapon that kills with one shot. For unarmored animals, the bow is recommended. For stubborn animals like bison or alligators, a sniper rifle is recommended.
Guide to perfect pelts – What you need to pay attention to
Step 1 – Find the right animal: Every animal you can hunt in Red Dead Redemption 2 has a quality rating. This becomes visible as soon as you target and examine an animal.
To focus on a wild animal, hold L2/LT. Then the “examine” button will appear in the lower right corner of the screen. Now hold R1/RB to examine the animal. Once the process is complete, you can display the information.
Tip: You can also use binoculars to examine animals from a distance. This also works with the scopes of weapons.
Step 2 – The stars of a wild animal: When you examine a wild animal, it is rated for quality. This is visible based on stars. There are the following ratings:
- 1 star: Poor quality – These animals will only give you poor quality pelts
- 2 stars: Good quality – You can obtain good pelts from these animals
- 3 stars: Flawless – Only from these animals do you get the coveted perfect pelts
So if you are looking for perfect pelts, you should only kill wild animals with 3 stars for that.
Which animals have which size?
The size of an animal determines which weapon you should use to kill it. In the following overview, you will see these classifications for all animals in Red Dead Redemption 2.

The right weapon for perfect pelts
There are optimal weapons for each animal size. You should use these to guarantee high-quality pelts.
Don’t shoot too much: Focus on taking out animals with one shot. These can be critical or fatal. Aim best for the animal’s head. Tip: Target the animals and then press the “Call” button. You make a noise and the animal raises its head – This way you hit the target more easily. This is how you get the pelt of the legendary bear.
- Fatal hits: A fatal hit takes the animal down immediately. These usually hit the brain or the heart. The animal dies instantly and you receive the highest possible quality of pelt.
- Critical hits: These critical hits only give you a chance for perfect pelts. Once you have Dead Eye at level 5, it shows you the fatal and critical areas of an animal. If you shoot at critical areas, the animal starts to bleed and later collapses. After that, you have the opportunity to make the final stab with the knife. This way you preserve the pelt.
Landing a critical or fatal hit is the prerequisite for perfect pelts.
Optimal weapon for each animal type: The table shown makes it clear which weapon with which ammunition is optimal for killing the different sizes of animals.
- Animal size Small
- Deadly hit: Bow with small game arrows
- Animal size Small-Medium
