Operators in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – Here’s what we know so far
What are Operators actually? Operators are often referred to as members of military or police special forces. In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, they are various characters that you can select and play in multiplayer.
How do the Operators work? Modern Warfare 2019 departs from the specialist system that was used in, for example, Black Ops 4.
The individual Operators do not have any special individual abilities. None can do something that another character cannot achieve. Each Operator is purely cosmetic. What matters will be your loadout and skill. However, each character has numerous appearances, personalities, voices, execution animations, and skins.
By the way, even though the Operators can visually differ greatly, the hit boxes, or hit zones, of the individual characters are all identical – even if, for example, a female character appears slimmer than a robust male counterpart. Apart from (depending on clothing and environment) a possibly slightly better camouflage effect, there are no gameplay-relevant differences – regardless of which Operator you choose.
What about the factions? The characters not only accompany you in the multiplayer battles themselves. At the beginning, each player selects one character from a faction. Depending on the conflict side, one of your two figures will always be displayed in lobbies. Additionally, you can set your absolute favorite and display it in all relevant menus.
The Operators are initially roughly divided into two factions, the Coalition and the Allegiance – essentially a kind of West versus East. Each faction consists of a standard soldier, with whom one begins, as well as 3 subgroups.
For the Coalition, they are
- SAS
- Warcom
- Demon Dogs
For the Allegiance, they are
- Spetsnaz
- Jackals
- Chimera
How many Operators are there? According to current reports from some streamers and YouTubers who have already tried the game, there are currently a total of 20 characters in multiplayer:
- one standard soldier per faction
- 3 Operators per subgroup
It is still unclear whether more will be added at launch or if appearances will be changed through skins.
How can you unlock additional Operators? As Game Informer revealed, you will start with the standard Operator and can then unlock all available characters in the game through gameplay.
It is not known whether this will also apply to Operators that may be released later.
In each faction, you can achieve progress by playing and accordingly unlock more characters from the subgroups.
This is how the Operator skins work: There will be additional skins for each Operator. How these are obtained – whether also through gameplay or through potential microtransactions – is currently unknown.
However, what the developers revealed to Game Informer is that skins determine the complete appearance of each Operator. There will be no specific items like shoes or headgear. Each skin embodies a total appearance.
Some of these skins have already been known since the start of the pre-orders for the various game editions:
What about microtransactions? Currently, there are no official details on this. However, Operator skins seem to be becoming a big deal in Modern Warfare – after all, it seems that alongside Operator selection, it is the only other customization option for the in-game character. Thus, some fans strongly predict additional microtransactions.
