How is the fantasy author involved in the development of the new RPG from the Dark Souls creators? The head of FromSoftware, Hidetaka Miyazaki, has now explained this in more detail in an interview.

He also spoke about the role of George R. R. Martin, who is involved in the development of the game. Martin is mainly known for his book series “A Song of Ice and Fire,” which the series Game of Thrones is based on.
The Mythos of Elden Ring
Who is Hidetaka Miyazaki? He is the president of FromSoftware. Miyazaki is known as the creative mind behind popular games like Demon’s Souls, the Dark Souls series (1 and 3), Bloodborne, or Sekiro.
All of these games stand for brilliant level design, enigmatic stories, great battles, and a tough difficulty level. Now, Elden Ring will be the next big title from Miyazaki.
How did the collaboration come about? Miyazaki is himself a big fan of George R. R. Martin. Thus, the idea came from him. However, he initially did not expect a collaboration.
That I am such a big fan of Mr. Martin led to our Executive Business Director Eiichi Nakajima contacting him, expecting that we would receive a rejection.
Finally, there was a conversation between Martin and Miyazaki, which Hidetaka himself describes as “incredible fun and stimulating.” This encouraged him to want to work with Martin, which ultimately happened.
Also, regarding the themes that Miyazaki had planned for the game, it seems they quickly found common ground. Thus, the work began.
This role was played by the Game of Thrones author: George R. R. Martin was mainly involved in creating “the mythos for the game world itself.”
This mythos was full of interesting characters and dramas with an abundance of mystical and mysterious elements. It was a wonderful source of inspiration for me and the development team.
Miyazaki himself can sometimes hardly contain his excitement and hopes that others will also enjoy it. But what else do we know so far about Elden Ring?
Elden Ring is once again heading towards Dark Fantasy
This is what we know so far about Elden Ring: So far, there is hardly any solid information.
- It will be an action RPG with a dark fantasy setting
- As in previous games, the character will be controlled from a third-person perspective
- The difficulty level will also be challenging again
- However, the focus will be on the RPG elements
- There will be magic and all sorts of weapons and equipment
- Once again, you can also create your own character
In comparison to Dark Souls, Elden Ring is expected to offer more freedom in gameplay. Miyazaki also emphasizes the significantly larger game world:
[…], I would say the biggest difference is that it will be open world. Therefore, the scale, narrative, as well as depth and freedom of exploration have dramatically expanded. It is undoubtedly our largest title so far, in terms of pure scope.
What can you expect from the game world? You will implement your own version of the “open world” idea. It will be a world full of threats, but also of many places that can be discovered.
There will also be large, multi-part “castles” that want to be explored. There is no further information on this yet. However, previous leaks mentioned a Nordic or Celtic-inspired setting.
