In the survival MMO Fallout 76, a player conducted a social experiment. He pretended to be a helpless beggar and asked for help. Read here how it turned out.
What is the deal with the beggar? The Fallout 76 community is known to be very helpful. There are supposedly groups of players who pretend to be police and protect newcomers from gankers.
An Argentine Fallout player named Andreslamantis wanted to test just how helpful the community really is. Therefore, he pretended to be a scruffy, ragged beggar.

He lived in a shabby hut and drew attention to himself by advertising “free hugs” or making pitying gestures. Indeed, players started to notice him.
Just how friendly is the Fallout 76 community?
How did the other players react? On the Polygon website, the experiences of Andreslamantis were described. Several players came to him to help. Among other things, the following happened:
- A player came to him and offered weapons and armor. After Andreslamantis asked for a weapon, the kind player built him a custom shotgun!
- Another player gave him a hat, but only so he wouldn’t have to see his bald head anymore.
- Another player was also rude and demanded “Put something on!” before actually giving Andreslamantis a uniform to wear. The player even came back later to check on how Andreslamantis was doing. He then gave him some building materials so he could build himself “a decent pad”.
Were there also negative examples? The majority of players were probably nice and helpful or left the beggar alone. At least one is said to have ambushed Andreslamantis while he was sleeping. He fled, and when he returned to his pad, the attacker had smashed the generator.
But according to Andreslamantis himself, he planned to move on soon anyway, so it wasn’t that bad.
The Fallout 76 community is indeed as nice, helpful, and kind as its reputation suggests. Do you belong to that?
