When looking at the ghost moves, Shadow Punch seems to be the weaker option compared to Shadow Ball. Although it charges more slowly, it deals significantly more damage than Shadow Punch. So, this move won’t noticeably help you in Raids.
How strong will Shadow Punch be in PvP? In PvP, Shadow Punch is already more interesting. Gengar’s pre-evolution Haunter, with the combination of Dark Claw and Shadow Punch, is among the best monsters in the Super League of Pokémon GO. Gengar can also benefit from this move.
As the user “Silph Arena Contributor” analyzed in the Pokémon subreddit, the rule for Gengar remains: Deal a lot of damage, take little damage. Shadow Punch gives you the opportunity to take out your opponents’ shields thanks to fast charge times.
Gengar has the advantage in the just-returned PvP League compared to Haunter of being able to withstand at least a bit more counter-offensive. Thus, it is not only a good option against fighting and grass Pokémon, but it can also put typical tanks like Azumarill under pressure.
Moreover, unlike Haunter, which simply cannot accumulate enough CP, Gengar can also be a good option in the Hyper and even Master League. With the new move, it can even pose a threat to monsters like Giratina. However, it is also clear that if your opponent has a very effective monster against Gengar, the fight can be over quickly for you.
Should you secure a Gengar with Shadow Punch? If you’re only looking at Raids and ignoring PvP, you don’t necessarily need to go for it. However, for PvP fans, the move is definitely worth it – it was similarly the case with Beedrill in the last Community Day.
How does Gengar learn the move? To teach Gengar Shadow Punch, you need to evolve Haunter into Gengar during the event period. Usually, this is also possible for up to 2 hours after the event ends.
