In the MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV there was a glitch where a raptor monster got stuck in one spot on the map and became invulnerable. Players quickly declared it a god and worshipped the velociraptor.
This was the immortal velociraptor: It happened on the US server Excalibur. In the area of Eastern La Noscea, a low-level zone, there is usually peace and quiet. That is, until players discovered a monster that got stuck in a rock.
A level 32 Grass Raptor had run into a spot on the map where it could not escape. Simultaneously, this glitch made it invulnerable. It took no damage from the attacks of players trying to free it: it was immortal.
So the players did the only logical thing: they founded a religion, began to worship the raptor, and celebrated it. Makes sense, after all, it is immortal and even the toughest bosses in the game cannot claim that. This is what it looked like in practice:
Over time, the news about the immortal raptor spread further and further, reaching other servers and even other data centers. Players from near and far came together to pay homage to the great immortal raptor in Final Fantasy XIV.
Even the fellow players in the FFXIV subreddit received the news about the new savior and the godlike raptor received more than 3,000 upvotes there (via. reddit). The reddit user hanyou007 commented: “Long live the Excalibur raptor!” and received 111 upvotes.
Even the popular in-game band Moogle Troupe came by. The Moogles regularly hold concerts on various servers, using instruments from the MMORPG, and played their tracks for the great raptor.
This is how the velociraptor evolved: Over time, the great velociraptor changed. Two more raptors joined, turning it into a kind of hydra, and eventually, a swarm of bees also got stuck in the spot. Together they formed an immortal velociraptor hydra with bees.
However, the glitch has been fixed with the server maintenance of patch 5.5. The immortal raptor has returned to its divine world and will watch over us from there.
Caught monsters are used for social events
These monsters were also caught: Players on reddit also share their own glitches that occurred on their servers.
- For example, during the Heavensward expansion in FFXIV, there was a “Sky Bear.” It was a bear enemy that floated in the sky in the Dravanian Hinterlands (via reddit.).
- The hunting monster Sabotender Bailerina got stuck in a pathing error and ran in circles on the Sargatanas server.
- On the Cactuar server there was also a raptor that players named Bruce.
Specifically, the rock in Eastern La Noscea where the divine raptor got stuck seems to be a known and very old monster trap. Bruce, the raptor, was reported five years ago. Other players from different servers have also reported encountering captured monsters at that spot.
However, none of them were worshipped as much as the immortal Excalibur velociraptor.
This is what it’s about: Game-breaking bugs and glitches are rather rare in FFXIV. Such serious errors, like the infamous Raubahn EX, have not been seen in the MMORPG for a while. The developers and QA team are doing a great job.
However, there are still smaller issues, like caught monsters, and the community uses them for their own amusement. Players take such glitches as an excuse to come together and turn it into a social event, attracting players from other servers to join in the fun.
The immortal velociraptor hydra with bees was fixed with update 5.5. However, it will live on in our memories. Just like the Sky Bear.
