Skins, also cosmetic items, can be purchased by players in free games and in paid titles. The prices range from seemingly small amounts like €4.99, to high two-digit amounts – the most expensive skins even exceed €100.
What was it about? In a survey we asked you at MeinMMO how much money you would spend at most for a single skin. We were also interested in whether it makes a difference to you whether you play a free game or a paid title. Therefore, this time there were two surveys in one article.
You responded in large numbers and we have now collected over 900 votes in one survey and nearly 600 votes in the other.
Hardly anyone would pay more than €20 in free-to-play games
These are the results for survey 1: The first survey was about your spending in free games. At the time of evaluation on October 25, 2022, 926 readers voted. Here were the results:
- I do not buy skins: 258 votes (28 %)
- Up to €10: 189 votes (20 %)
- Up to €5: 156 votes (17 %)
- Up to €20: 137 votes (15 %)
- Up to €15: 51 votes (6 %)
- Up to €25: 32 votes (3 %)
- More than €100: 29 votes (3 %)
- Up to €30: 23 votes (2 %)

- Up to €100: 8 votes (1 %)
- Up to €40: 7 votes (1 %)

- Up to €45: 2 votes (0 %)
The majority of you do not buy any skins in free games. Several of you have indicated a pain threshold between “up to €5” and “up to €20”.
Only a few readers would pay more than €20 for a single skin.
Nearly half refuse to pay for skins in paid titles
These are the results for survey 2: The second survey was about your spending in paid games. At the time of evaluation on October 25, 2022, 630 readers voted. Here were the results:
- I do not buy skins: 298 votes (47 %)
- Up to €10: 108 votes (17 %)
- Up to €5: 103 votes (16 %)
- Up to €20: 47 votes (7 %)
- Up to €15: 21 votes (3 %)

- Up to €100: 3 votes (0 %)
- Up to €40: 2 votes (0 %)
- Up to €75: 1 vote (0 %) (
- Up to €45: 1 vote (0%)
In fact, the results here are similar. Even in paid games, most would not buy skins. Here, nearly half of the readers who voted are against it.
Otherwise, the majority of the votes here are also between “up to €5” and “up to €20”. Only a few players are willing to pay more money.
Those who spend money want to be able to resell the skin
What do the comments say? In the comments, some shared about specific skins they have treated themselves to. This includes some more expensive examples, where there is also the option of resale.
I once got a skin in Counter Strike. A Butterfly Fade StatTrak. This cost me €320. Now this skin is worth €1900. So yes, in some games I would buy a skin again (Earlier, csgo was paid; today it’s free.)

Many of the readers write in the comments that they either stopped buying skins or have never spent money on them.
As reasons for not buying a skin, readers mention that they find the original design in shooters more beautiful or that they miss the challenge when one simply buys a skin instead of earning it.
I have never spent money on a skin, and I will continue to do so. I also don’t find it appealing to walk around in a shooter with colorful weapons; I prefer the original design. But well, whoever has fun with it…
MeinMMO reader Kreylem
When readers do buy a skin, it is because it offers a tactical advantage or they particularly like it.
What do you think of the results? Did you expect it or are you surprised? Please let us know in the comments.
Here you will find another article where players would actually prefer to spend money for an emblem in Destiny 2 instead of just getting it from streamers.
