In January 2020, Temtem made a big splash. The MMO was considered a competitor to the Pokémon games for many and attracted thousands of players at launch. But what is the situation now, almost 2 months later?
This is Temtem: The game is also referred to as a Pokémon MMO, as it combines the principle of Pokémon with various MMO elements. Many players had long wished for such a game, and Temtem was received very positively.
In the game, you can catch small colorful monsters and level them up. In combat, you can then face off against NPCs or other trainers. It all sounds very much like Pokémon, but the difference is that it all takes place in a large online world. Factors like housing or the interaction with other trainers and the synergies of Temtems are crucial.
All of this brought Temtem and the small Spanish development team a huge hype at release. On January 21, when Temtem started in Early Access, the servers were flooded. 20,000 players gained access there, and thousands waited patiently for their start. On the first day, more than 30,000 players were reportedly active at peak times, and on Steam, the Pokémon MMO was ahead of giants like GTA Online and Monster Hunter World.
2 Months After Release – What is the Status of Temtem?
What do the player numbers say? Temtem can no longer reach the numbers from release. According to Steamcharts, Temtem peaked at 4,554 players in the last 24 hours. Over the last 30 days, it had an average of 5,150 players.

Compared to the release month of January, this is already a significant decline. Back then, it had an average of nearly 22,000 active players.
Nonetheless, one must say that the numbers of over 4,500 players are quite strong for an indie MMO. Currently, it ranks 111th among all games on Steam by player count. (As of March 17 at 11:00 AM)
Why are the numbers declining? It might not necessarily be dwindling interest causing the drop. The Early Access version offers only about 50% of the content of Temtem. The story content can be completed in about 20 to 30 hours. Many players are now waiting for new content.
Of course, you can have a lot of experiences in Temtem alongside the story, but this seems to keep mainly the extreme fans in the game.
What new content has there been? The new patches brought a new area but primarily focused on fixes within the game. Many new contents have not been visible so far. However, they added an endgame area with the Saipark.
The developers have already given new insights into future features. According to the roadmap, new matchmaking is expected this spring. Further Temtems are planned for the summer.
What do players say about Temtem? The mood in the community is, similar to the start, very good. On Steam, there are almost 21,000 reviews, of which 88% were positive. Only 2,360 reviews were negative, some of which were made only because of the third pronoun.
Overall, many players report that Temtem still has several bugs, but they notice the developers’ efforts. Furthermore, players emphasize that the game is still in Early Access and more Temtems will come.
So writes the user Crimefire@aka as a review on Steam:
- “The game still has some bugs, and I miss some features in the game, but since the game is still in Early Access, that is not a problem, as I think it will all be fixed. Also, it’s already 100 times better than Pokémon, and I enjoy playing it very much.”
When is Temtem supposed to leave Early Access? The MMO is scheduled to release version 1.0 in spring 2021. This also includes a release on PS4, Xbox One, and Switch. Until then, a lot of endgame content is expected to be released.
